You know, as children, we often fail to realize or understand the importance of some of the values our parents instill in us. We see them as mere restrictions that hinder our freedom and prevent us from having fun. We wouldn't blame ourselves, we were too innocent to understand anything. But, as we grow older, we begin to appreciate the wisdom in the lessons they taught us.

Now let me tell you about one of those lessons my father taught me which when I reflect on it now I understand clearly his reasons. And one such lesson is the importance of Reputation.

Growing up, I do remember my father constantly reminding me and my siblings about the significance of having a good name. He would often tell us tha, "A good name is better than silver or gold," I know it's a popular phrase but then I didn't really see the meaning of it. Then we would
always roll our eyes, thinking he was being overly dramatic. Maybe he wasn't in support of our friends or he doesn't want us to have fun like the other kids at the party and try out new stuff, then we would say. But as I have gone through life, and come to a more understanding years of my life. I have come to realize the truth in his words and that it wasn't just about the friends we kept growing up.

So why should reputation be a top priority? Why is a good name better than silver or gold?

First let me try in my own little way to make you understand the meaning of the word "Reputation"

Reputation is the perception of others about you. It is what people say or think about you when you are not in the room. Literally it is the reflection of your character, behavior, and actions. It is what others see in you that gives them such an impression about you. It is like a good name which is better than silver or gold. It is something you can't buy in the market, you earn it yourself with no help from anybody. Reputation is crucial because it can determine how others perceive you and how they will interact with you. Can it affect your personal and professional life? Sometimes yes.

The reason why a good name is better than silver or gold is because reputation is priceless. You can earn money and accumulate wealth, but a tarnished reputation is difficult to restore and it can drastically affect your brand. And the tricky part there is that once your reputation is damaged, it takes a whole lot of time and effort to regain people's trust and respect. Now let me give you some time to think about some famous celebrities (anyone at all) whose bad reputation affected their brands seriously.

It's not just about the brand, it's also about the doors a good reputation can open for you. In my clime, this is very much seen in our business world. A good reputation can open doors for opportunities. As you all know and can agree with me that people are more likely to do business with someone they trust and respect. Employers prefer to hire individuals with a good reputation because they want to associate their brand with positive values. Having a good reputation can lead to more referrals and recommendations, which can increase your network and potential income professionally or otherwise.

It is essential to prioritize reputation because it is not only beneficial to us but also to the people around us.

A good reputation is contagious. What do I mean by that? Our actions and behavior can impact the people we love and care about. If we have a good reputation, it can reflect positively on our family and friends. He's the brother or sister to that good man can go a long way in helping your family or friends. However, if we have a bad reputation, it can bring shame and embarrassment to our loved ones.

I know most times we shouldn't be hothere about what others think about us, but it is not just about what they think. It is about you as a human having good character values. Having a good reputation means living a life of integrity, honesty, and respect. It means treating others with kindness and fairness.

A good reputation is not something that can be faked; it comes from living a life of good character. Remember, a good reputation takes a lifetime to build but can be destroyed in a moment.
