Punishment Works, We Just Don’t Use It.
Talking of if punishment actually works, well I would say yes. When punishment are really done and carried out the way it is supposed to, then it will definitely work.
And I say that because what we see today isn't actually punishment. Punishment is what you get after you break a law, go against a rule and regulations or do something that's wrong. Punishment we can also say is the end result or consequences of going against a laid down rule. It is designed to make the offender and law breaker pay for the wrong they did and to as well discourage potential offenders from doing or repeating the same thing.

And a lot of people often argue that punishments don't actually work, which I won't blame them for, it's because of the situation we've found ourselves. One that makes it feels like only the poor gets punished while those who are rich and well connected often find a way to navigate their way through.
And that is why we find out that crime keeps happening, I love the various punishments that had been assigned to each crime and offense, so I won't say the punishment is not enough, the problem is that the punishment are not exactly carried out.
Like I was saying earlier, a lot of people feel they are above the law and can't get punished, some feel they are too connected and know who and who to reach out to just so to avoid the consequences of their actions/punishment. And with that kind of thing happening, there's no way crime wouldn't continue.
Some months ago a popular Nigerian celebrity has an issue, Bobrisky to be precise. We were all told that he/she was serving some jail term, but later we got to know and find out that he/she wasn't jailed and not even in the prison premises, rather a place was rented for him/her to stay outside of the prison premises. All because he/she has connections and was able to put some call through to people who feel, nah, she/he can't be jailed/stay in a prison premises.
Now think of the effect such will have on the masses. It will definitely ruin the trust we have in our systems. It makes us believe that punishment is only for we the ordinary citizens who don't have any connections while the rich and well connected ones will always find a way around whatever crime they commit.
I will also love to cite the happenings in Nigeria presently, how armed kidnappers, abductors, killers were being apprehended by our security operatives, and instead of them being jailed for life, get death by hanging or by firing squad or something of sort, we find out that they take them to rehabilitation centers and reintegrate them back into the society... Like, can you even imagine. Not as if I'm against rehabilitation, but not for heartless k!ller's like this people.

Now, tell me why such offenders who have been reintegrated back into the society won't go back to what they were doing before, because their believe now is that nothing serious will happen to them, they believe of they're being apprehended again, they will take them to a rehab and at the end reintegrate them back into the society.
Also, punishment cannot always be the solution to everything. A lot of problems and crimes we are seeing today are as a result of bad governance, poor systems, poverty, unemployment and the likes. I'm not saying all of that should be a reason why we should commit crime or a justification for crime, no, what I'm saying is if this issues are addressed, crime itself will reduce.
In conclusion, punishments definitely works,so far it is been carried out the way it is supposed to. We shouldn't give room to anyone to believe they can bribe or navigate their way out of getting punished. Nobody is, and should be above the law.

Well said. Accountability is what makes punishment work. If offenders believe they can escape consequences, crime becomes easier to justify in their minds.
You get it.
Thanks a lot for your wonderful comment.
Majority of criminals that commit crimes in this era, have it at the back of their mind that their sponsor will definitely bail them out. That is why some people no longer fear punishment because they know, they won't get the appropriate punishment for the crimes they have committed.
Yea, you're right.
Thanks a lot for stopping by.
Biggy thanks 🙏
