Greetings to all the amazing friends here. Am glad to be a member of this community and am super excited I got to find out about this group from my friend @jmis101 while going through her blog. I have took my time to through the engagement from members and also to read the rules and regulations binding this community. Being very conversant with the rules, I decided to kick start by participating in this week's contest on Reading.

SHORT STORY ON MY READING HABIT

I didn't grow up to love reading, reading wasn't my thing when I was a teenager. Right now, at this age, I do sit back most times to ponder on how I was able to pass my external exams then.

Reading can be boring and it can be fun and stimulating. For me then it was super boring I must say. But now it's no longer boring as I used to see it to be. I have grown to find out that my reading habit at my teenage age was a very bad reading habit, I don't read to assimilate, I only read for fun, to fly away time. The most funny aspect of this is that I use this reading method in all reading. Both in school and at leisure.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

Do you like to read?

My answer to that question is yes. I have grown to love reading unlike my teenage days. Maybe I would have still hated reading but thank goodness that something happened which was like a punch to my face. When my classmate then in school bluntly said to my face "We are not like dumb Mary, who can't even pronounce her name well if she sees it in a sentence while reading". I felt embarrassed and that sentence forced me to keep calm and do the needful. I returned home and told my mum "I want to be serious and learn how to read perfectly".

I began watching news channels, watching how newscasters read, I learnt pronunciation of words, I had keen interest in my phonics, I practiced fluency and checking for high vocabulary words in dictionary, I learned how to observe punctuations as well. With my keen interest in improving, I started seeing positive changes in my reading skill and till now am good and still improving. I'm no more than dumb, stupid girl they viewed me to be in school then and I'm glad today for the insult I received then although I almost fought her then. Hahaha

NEXT QUESTION

What kind of books, magazines, newspapers or articles do you like to read?

For the kind of books I like reading, I like to read religious books, fiction and non fiction novels and school books.

LASTLY

Why do you like to read that?

I like to read these three categories of books because of the following reasons:

Am not that very religious like 100% out of 100% but I love religious books, reading religious books edify my spirit. It also strengthened my personal devotion and faith. Not just that, they contain lots of wisdom and knowledge, they aid enkindle my daily reflection on what I have digested.

For fiction and non fiction novels. This is another set of books I like reading with keen interest. When I was learning how to be a good reader that is not just reading for pleasure but to assimilate and visualize what I have read, novels were actually what helped my fluency in reading and this has made me love reading novels. There is creativity in stories. Sitting down to create characters in the outer universe of fiction is not what everyone can do but my love of reading stories has helped me in this aspect. Although I might not be very good, I am doing my best in terms of writing short fictional stories.

I love reading novels from these authors:
James Hadley Chase
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Wole Soyinka
James Fenimore Cooper
Howard Fast

And finally, for the school books. I like to read school related books to widen my knowledge on different fields of study. For my own field of study which is Communication Arts, I read books relating to journalism, film and documentary, photography. Books in these mentioned areas widens my knowledge about what I am studying and gives me that confidence and courage to defend my profession anywhere.
