Splinterlands - Battle With Giant ROC (Weekly Battle Post)

One of the first cards I ever got was the Giant Roc. I remember not long after I would mostly put it in second position when ever I played fire splinter due to its reach ability. The highest level I have of it is an alpha level 5 and since then there have been many other good monsters similar to Giant Roc. Still in today's post I recap a brawl battle I had using the monster card and winning.

Formations

The match was max out in mana at 99 with rule sets super sneak and close range. In addition earth and life splinters were not allowed use. With that I decided to lean on fire splinter as I wanted to take advantage of super sneak.

My formation started off with a Cerberus, followed up with a Gladius card, Gorth, and then followed by Raging Impaler, Giant Roc, Elemental Phoenix, and ending with Serpentine Soldier. It is worth noting I was in the Alpha + Beta bronze league fray.

My opponent went with water splinter and started with Frozen Soldier followed by Relenor Cleaver, Water Elemental, Mischievous Mermaid, Magi Sphinx, and ending with Pirate Captain. Off the bat it was not clear why the formation was setup the way it was but with no clear direction it did not mean the formation was setup incorrectly.

Round 1

Cerberus is knocked out before end of the round and in return so was the Pirate Captain. Now at 5 versus 5 it was still neck and neck. However Frozen Soldier was down to a health of 2 so worth noting that it would likely not last through two rounds.

Round 2

At the end of round 2 it became obvious that I had the upper hand. First Frozen Soldier was knocked out but then Magi Sphinx followed up with Mermaid. It was clear the mix attacks of magic, range and melee indeed was not an ideal setup however I was also fortunate to have my monsters be able to land blows when it counted.

Round 3

At the end of the round I lost Gorth while my opponent still had its remaining monsters. It was clear this was not going to be an short battle.

Round 4

At exactly in the of round 4 I got the victory. Both Cleaver and Water Elemental were knocked out near the end of the round while my monsters handled the attack pretty well. There was no reason to believe I would have lost once round 2 was over but it dragged a bit until I came out with the win.

Conclusions

The Giant Roc did supplement in the attack that allow my team to win. However its reach ability was somewhat limited with super sneak rule set. Most monsters were attacking the rear making them all active participants in attacking from the start.

In the end the melee was really what push my team to the win. I had enough melee to get my team to victory without the help of Gorth and Raging Impaler. I ended up having Giant Roc as my tanker at then end of the match which by that seems like a proper ending.
