Splinterlands - Is a Gold Foil Furious Chicken Worth Buying?

Likely the most used card in battles is none other than the Furious Chicken. Often times the card is used mainly to fill the lineup if there is still a spot open and no more mana can be used. Sometimes it is useful to have the card in formation such as rule sets like equalizer. The main use though may likely be the gold foil version where it will provide additional 10% DEC bonus earn for every battle won. Today I look at current prices of the card and current DEC earnings to see how long it takes to profit using the Furious Chicken if it was rented and if it was purchased.

Gold I League Earnings?

image.png

Today I earned in total around 635 DEC through my rank battles. On a normal day I play about 20 rank battles to lower my ECR bar from 100% down to low 80%. This is all done in the gold I league. Assuming this is what I earn on a daily basis and ball park take 10% of that total I get about 63 DEC that is potentially earned with the use of a gold foil Furious Chicken. This is also assuming the Furious Chicken is used in every battle that was won. So in summary having Furious Chicken in my lineup I earn an additional 63 DEC daily.

Renting Gold Foil Furious Chicken Worth It?

image.png

The cheapest gold foil Furious Chicken to rent presently is slightly over 20 DEC. The difference from my estimate of how much DEC I earn daily with Furious Chicken the difference is 63 - 20 = 43 DEC. This means renting out a Furious Chicken for those who do not have the card works. Higher leagues in diamond and champion it is certain they earn even more DEC.

Buying Gold Foil Furious Chicken Worth It?

Present lowest price for the card is $391 which is equivalent to 34,400 DEC. The burn rate of the card is 3,000 DEC. A quick division 34,400 / 63 = 546 Days. That means almost 1 and 1/2 years to breakeven on owning a Gold Foil Furious Chicken. Although this is just a ballpark estimate based on playing gold I league. If we assume DEC burn rate of the card is added to the breakeven total then 31,400 / 63 = 498 Days. This basically cuts 2 months to break even.

To accelerate the break even price assume I can go to higher leagues which will earn more DEC per a win. Or wait to see if the card price can drop so buy in is lower.

Conclusions

The reason I wanted to look at the ROI for the gold foil Furious Chicken is because the main purpose of owning it is to make additional DEC earnings when used. There are benefits of using the card beyond earning more DEC, but the focus for me is how long it takes to earn back the price of buying the card.

Surprising it will take a while in order to reach break even if I purchase the card out right. However renting the card daily I have the potential to immediately earn profits. This is making me rethink about how I purchase cards when there maybe potential for better rate of returns if I went with renting. The drawback with renting is the cards can be removed from my account if lender breaks contract, and cards potential price appreciation.

I agreed with the analysis. So far renting has been more lucrative in term of ROI compare to buying Gold foil card. As of now I see relatively better ROI to hold DEC or move it to LP pool to increase SPS airdrop, at least for the airdrop period now.

Its a sign of FOMO when earnings is a lot less than the purchasing price of the cards. Then again as a long term holder of Splinterlands I hope this continues indefinitely, lol. LP pools for double the air drop pools definitely good. !LUV !PIZZA

Thank you for that analysis. It gives me something to think about in the buy vs. rent comparison process. !PIZZA

Don't forget Chicken won't be playable in Modern League once it goes live. This could seriously hurt the value of the card in the future.

I am holding to my Gold Furious Chicken quite close and I am earning daily out of it. I am not sure if I would buy it although, maybe they will release another 0 Mana card.

This has certainly got me thinking about renting more gold foil cards now especially if I was going to rent a few anyway. Thanks for the idea.
