Hello dear bird-loving friends, today it finally stopped raining here in the city, it's been two weeks since I've seen the sun shining. On a walk to the nearest park I saw a lady feeding the pigeons, so I sought her out for conversation to meet her as I am new to this city and don't know many people.

In Vigo there are this kind of pigeons everywhere, they nest in any corner of the buildings. When my husband and I arrived in this city and observed the pigeons we realized that it is very common for them to have fingers and even some of their legs mutilated, we thought that they were suffering from some kind of disease, but when I talked to this lady, she told me what was happening with these birds.

It turns out that pigeons are considered pests by some residents and business owners because they dirty the windows and the front of buildings and the doors of businesses, so people began to place tightly stretched threads along their balconies and windows to prevent these little friends from nesting there.

When the pigeons fly to the windows their legs burst some of the threads and these get wrapped around their toes and legs and eventually cut the extremities until they tear them off, some birds can still see the thread tangled in their legs.

The lady also told me that this practice is already prohibited by the authorities but some people still do it to protect the facades of their homes.

The truth is that I have never seen anything like this before, I feel very sorry for the animals but I also think of the people who have to clean up the dirt of these little friends every day, what would you do if this were your case?

Hola queridos amigos amantes de las aves, hoy por fin dejó de llover aquí en la ciudad, hace dos semanas que no veía el sol resplandeciente. En una caminata al parque más cercano vi una señora alimentando las palomas, así que le busqué conversación para conocerla ya que soy nueva en esta ciudad y no conozco a mucha gente.

En Vigo hay este tipo de palomas por todos lados, hacen nido en cualquier rincón de los edificios. Cuando mi esposo y yo llegamos a esta ciudad y observamos las palomas nos dimos cuenta que es muy común que tengan dedos y hasta algunas de sus patas mutiladas, llegamos a pensar que padecían algún tipo de enfermedad, pero al conversar con esta señora, ella me contó lo que pasaba con estas aves.

Resulta que las palomas son catalogadas como unas plagas por algunos habitantes y dueños de comercios ya que ensucian las ventanas y el frente de los edificios y las puertas de los negocios, entonces la gente empezó a colocar hilos bien tensados a lo largo de sus balcones y ventanas para evitar que estas amiguitas aniden ahí.

Cuando las palomas vuelan hacia las ventanas sus patas revientan algunos de los hilos y estos se enrollan en sus dedos y patas y con el tiempo van cortando las extremidades hasta arrancarlas, algunas aves aún se les ve el hilo enredado en sus patas.

También la señora me dijo que esa practica ya está prohibida por las autoridades pero algunas personas todavía hacen eso para proteger las fachadas de sus viviendas.

La verdad nunca había visto algo parecido, me da mucha lástima con los animalitos pero también pienso en las personas que tienen que limpiar a diario la suciedad de estas amiguitas ¿Que harían ustedes si fuera este su caso?
