On the 29th of November, 2021, I was attacked. Yes, you read that well. I know Mondays have always been busy, tough and extra but this one was just too extra.
I always have to get to work early as my resumption time is 7am. I work on the island, and if I want to meet up with the resumption time, I've got to leave home early. I've been doing this for a while, but on this day, I got scared.
I got to the bus stop close to my place of work and decided to walk to the office just to save up. I decided to try a shorter route which I discovered the previous work day while going home with my friends.
This turned out to be the wrongest decision. Just a few minutes after walking, a guy jumped in front of me and demanded I give him my bag. I initially thought he wanted to ride a bike because he was with a bike man. Imagine my shock, I had to ask him if he was using jazz, because the audacity he talked with was appalling.
He said it again and this time he backed it up with a gun. It was such a funny sight, the gun I mean. It looked so fake and weird. Far from the guns I've seen in movies or on uniformed men. I was definitely sure it was a fake gun.
"You dey fear me with toy gun, say wetyn happen, na ment". These were the words I spoke to him, he looked shocked, and the next thing I knew, he dragged my bag and was seated on the bike while the bike man was trying to move.
I couldn't even believe what was happening. This man wasn't just taking my bag and leaving. I don't even know how my petite self dragged him down and held him tight. There was no way he was leaving with my bag. Something I worked hard for. My bag contained my ATM card, my work token, my phone, and my money. I was pretty broke and him stealing my bag will make me more broke and stranded.
The heavens knew I wasn't ready for unplanned expenses, especially one of this such.
He then hit my face, tried to cock the gun but he couldn't. This gave me more guts, and confirmed my doubts of the gun being real. I held him tight, and started screaming for help while matching his legs with all the strength I could muster.
People ignored me, Lagosians can form mind your business at the wrong time. Finally, a man came to my aid. He engaged in a struggle with the thief. After about 15 minutes, he was able to disarm the thief. Other passers-by then came to help out.
Sad thing was the thief ended up escaping. We had to take the gun to the police station to make a report. At the station, I found out the gun was actually real and a very deadly local gun that could kill me instantly. The facts were too much for my already faint heart to bear, I immediately lost consciousness.
After a few minutes, I was revived. I was dropped at work by the police men and the man who saved me. I couldn't even concentrate at work so my boss asked me to go home.
I'm writing this with so much appreciation in my heart to God. He saved me definitely and I didn't even lose anything.
Let's all thank God for me and always be security conscious.
Thanks for reading ❤.
