Ethereum Dencun Upgrade Fails Uptake

We’re just shy of two weeks since the Dencun upgrade went live on the Ethereum network that brought in Blobs to lower Gas Prices for the chain but it all isn’t as expected which has even left Vitalik the founder of Ethereum stumped.

When Ethereum underwent the Dencun upgrade hopes were high for a revolutionary transformation in the realm of Layer-2 (L2) transactions. The introduction of "blobs," aimed at reducing gas fees to near-zero levels was anticipated to spark a surge in activity across Ethereum's network of Layer-2 solutions.

However, recent observations by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and industry experts suggest that the anticipated usage boom has yet to materialize. Which has been a hard pill to swallow for many. Although the upgrade is set to cover the chain for the next 5 years and enable continued growth and development without sending GAS prices through the roof enabling a more secure and scalable network

What Is Dencun Update?

The Dencun upgrade covered and launched by the implementation of EIP-4844 aimed to address scalability issues on Ethereum by introducing a novel data storage solution known as "blobs." These blobs. These Blobs stored on chain temporarily through proto-danksharding are designed to significantly reduce gas fees for Layer-2 transactions.

Each block can accommodate up to six blobs offering ample space for L2 settlement mechanisms. The upgrade promises a transformative shift making transactions on Layer-2 networks notably cheaper and more accessible.

Despite the seamless execution and implementation of the Dencun upgrade Vitalik Buterin expressed surprise at the low level of usage observed across Layer-2 networks post-implementation. Initial projections anticipated an average utilization of three blobs per block. Yet current levels stand at a staggering 67% below this target. While transaction volumes on Layer-2 networks have surged the anticipated spike in activity following the upgrade has not materialized as expected.

This shows that either people aren’t aware of the upgrade or aren’t utilising it to it’s full potential just yet and the network needs to catch up to implement the use of blobs. Or perhaps the issue wasn’t as big yet as first thought.

Current Uptake Stats

The reduction in gas fees on Layer-2 networks following the Dencun upgrade has been significant and many projects and users are saving a lot of money in reduced GAS fees. However, the expected surge in usage has not been commensurate with the drastic fee reductions. Some Layer-2 networks like Coinbase's Base experienced a doubling in transaction volume accompanied by intermittent failures and sudden spikes in gas fees. Despite these developments the overall uptake of blobs and subsequent transaction activity remain below projected levels.

Several factors are being considered for the lower than expected utilization of blobs and the muted surge in Layer-2 transactions. Firstly, not all Layer-2 networks have fully integrated the Dencun upgrade which is limiting its impact on overall network activity. Additionally concerns regarding the complexity of transitioning between fee mechanisms type-2 and type-3 transactions may have deterred some operators from maximizing blob utilization.

Unless project leads have sound knowledge on how to upgrade their networks and implement Dencun effectively it is unlikely we will see a full uptake of blobs. Perhaps in the near future Vitalik will bring in an upgrade that will enable ease of use for Blobs and we can see a higher uptake and implementation

Future Outlook

While the current utilization of blobs may fall short of expectations optimism remains regarding the long term prospects of the Dencun upgrade. As more Layer-2 networks embrace the benefits of reduced gas fees and enhanced scalability we can anticipate a gradual uptick in blob usage.

With the ongoing developments in Ethereum's ecosystem which include the integration of Dencun across various networks this promises to bolster transaction activity and drive innovation in Layer-2 solutions.

What Do We Think?

The Ethereum Dencun upgrade is a massive step in the right direction for scalability and reduced transaction costs which often are a barrier for many using Ethereum. Despite many encountering unforeseen challenges in its implementation we can expect more and more projects becoming used to it’s development and eventually be rolled out in full.

Despite the successful deployment of blobs and the subsequent reduction in gas fees, the anticipated surge in Layer-2 usage has yet to materialize. As Ethereum's ecosystem continues to evolve and adapt to the realities of blockchain technology and it’s growing userbase, this upgrade will greatly benefit the cryptosphere.
