Today's Breaking Crypto News You Don't Want To Miss

Today’s Crypto Currencies recent events are quite the action packed considering just a few months ago the only news really emerging was the ongoing legal action brought forward by the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

News today involves the one and only football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, the XRP crypto currency, and a crypto mixer linked to North Korean hackers which have made headlines the world over and they’re quite juicy especially the news relating to North Korea and the U.S’s ongoing work to disrupt the rogue nation avoiding sanctions through hacking Crypto Currency.

So Let's delve right into today’s latest developments and their possible implications.

Ronaldo's Billion-Dollar Lawsuit

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a massive class action lawsuit in the United States with plaintiffs seeking damages exceeding US1 billion. The lawsuit alleges that Ronaldo's promotion of Binance the world's largest crypto currency exchange. Led the investors to make loss making investments particularly in Binance's native token, BNB crypto currency.

The lawsuit claims that Ronaldo's endorsement resulted in a significant "500% increase in searches" for Binance due to his world wide celebrity status and potentially encouraging individuals to invest in what the plaintiffs term "unregistered securities."

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) considers assets like BNB as securities imposing disclosure requirements on celebrities endorsing them. In this case Ronaldo is accused of failing to disclose the compensation he received for promoting Binance.

Nigel Green, CEO of DeVere Group stated that the complexities of this case extend beyond Ronaldo as each nation has different rules and requirements when it comes to Crypto currencies. He is urging attention towards global regulators who have been slow in providing clear guidelines for the evolving financial landscape.

Despite the legal challenges Ronaldo and Binance continue to hint at future collaborations leaving the crypto community curious about their next move.

XRP Regulatory Storm

In another corner of the crypto world XRP continues to make daily headlines and continues to face regulatory challenges as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) continues its lawsuit against Ripple Labs.

The SEC and Ripple are currently engaged in remedies related discovery with a courtordered deadline of February 12, 2024.

The outcome of this discovery process will significantly impact the future of XRP.

Ripple aims to demonstrate the legality of its sales to U.S. institutional investors citing a favorable precedent in Morrison v NAB where the Supreme Court limited the SEC's jurisdiction to U.S. based sales only.

The broader regulatory landscape including warnings from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and ongoing scrutiny of digital assets contributes to a challenging environment for XRP. The price action of XRP remains sensitive to developments in the SEC's case and broader regulatory sentiments.

But it’s latest deal to provide services to HSBC has continued to provide the company a much needed boost to it’s overall value and continues to be highly watched by investors retail and corporate.

US Cracks down on North Korean Hackers

In a move that’s not only a major win for Crypto investors but the US government and provides an intersection of crypto currency and international law enforcement. the FBI in collaboration working with the Dutch Financial Intelligence and Investigation Service has successfully seized the websites of Sinbad a crypto mixer which has allegedly been for a long time utilised by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Sinbad describing it as a "key money laundering tool" for the Lazarus Group. Sinbad is accused of processing millions of dollars from Lazarus Group heists including funds stolen from major hacks like Horizon Bridge and Axie Infinity.
The Treasury Department in a strong and clear message warned against virtual currency mixers facilitating illicit activities.

Sinbad joins the list of crypto mixers which includes Tornado Cash and Blender.io that have faced U.S. government sanctions.

Today’s developments are quite significant but showcase the robust work undertaken by the US in bringing down North Korean Hackers. This month has been filled with legal complexities and regulatory scrutiny that continue to drive crypto currencies into mainstream adoption on multiple fronts.

Celebrity endorsements continue to be an issue that result in legal battles and law enforcement interventions.

Hmm
I have actually forgotten that Ronaldo is an ambassador of Binance
