Never believe the word of African parents that ask you to tell the truth instead of lying.

Biblical lying is a sin but I must say telling lies is part of us human and some lies we do tell is not to harm people or cause an issue but to protect people or let peace be.

When I was 16 years then and attending waec lessons, there was a time I said the truth and wish I have lied instead. My parents are the type that use to say “don't worry you can open up or tell the truth I won't do anything to you”. I am glad I learnt my lessons now, and I don't believe those words again because it's said just to lure you to say the truth then you receive your punishment.

My dad is the typical African man that limits his children to certain places and it means I am not always free to go out then that he asked me to take bike and be coming home straight whenever we are done with lessons.

But I won't listen and want to vibe with people when I close from lessons and walk home instead, talking and having fun.

There was this boy I and he was doing lovey-dovey even though we didn't know what love is called then, all we believe is we are in love and he use to walk me halfway to my house whenever we are done with lessons.

Unfortunately, one day my dad saw me with him and he didn't say anything or branch but went home straight, waiting for me to come home.

Then he asked who the guy is to me and he speaks to me softly by saying I should tell the truth because he is my dad and won't do anything to me. Believing him, I told him I and the guy like each other and that's how I got myself into trouble and was given a lot of African punishments like kneeling and counting Abc -z and was grounded for two weeks 🙁🥲.

If I have known I will just have said he is a friend or deny him🥲 but I wish I have lied instead of saying the truth.

😂😂
This prompt is, indeed, interesting.

I believe we have all experienced Lies and punishment. Growing up, I discovered something. I'm not sure who taught me; my parents? the television? or relatives? But here we go;

'Speak the truth. Receive immediate punishment, but you will only have to tell it once and serve your punishment once.'

'Tell a lie, forward the punishment, and you will have to tell 10 more lies to cover it up for as long as you can. In either case, the truth will be revealed, and you will receive 10 times the punishment instead of 1'

When I considered the cost & effort of maintaining a lie, I decided to always tell the truth & be done with it whooping. I did try to stay away from situations that would force me to lie.
This discipline has made me far more courageous in telling the truth without fear at this point in my life.

You've written a Lovely and honest post. Bravo🔥

You are right dear it’s better to say the truth and receive your punishment than lieing and have to tell thousands of lie to cover up for the lie and I must say that’s so relatable and honesty it’s always the best thing to do.

Thanks so much for your lovely contribution.

Hahaha, saying the truth really save you because that punishment you served will always give you a signal to stay away from men which you're seeing the benefit today.

How will a girl like you then tell an African Dad that you like someone? 😅😅😅😅 I trust my African parents. They no dey carry last for such punishment. They will tell you “is that what I sent you to school to do?” 🤣🤣

But it's all in the past now and no one can stop us from having friends.

Lol this scenario is a funny one 😃😃

you are even lucky that your parent are not too harsh, maybe you would have received serious beating and you still have the mark on your body till now... On the other hand it's good you said the truth and you're corrected because such act is a bad one as you're too small for that then.

I enjoyed reading your story.

Hmmm it's so so common to most African parents and I must say it isn't a good thing, when we are not straight forward with out kids, they'll most likely not trust, nor open up to us again.

Sorry to learn about how you were punished, even though it's for your own good and because they love you.

African parents will never disappoint me 😂

I believe everyone has experienced some sort of truthfulness and punishment in which you will end up blaming yourself for saying the truth.

But it is what it is, saying the truth is actually the best because the grooming is actually what made us (Me in particular)

Just as you have said the truth and he punished you, if there is anything he felt you need to know or advice you about, he will just so you can caution your steps rather than lying and not getting corrected for bad things. One might end up blaming themselves afterwards you know.

It's good you said the truth though as you had no idea what love meant, confusing crush and love is so common at that 16 years age range, at least daddy will know how to caution his daughter more.

You see lying is a spirit on it's own, because I do wonder how people tell lies even at childhood. Well, I think it's the environment we find ourselves which is Africa (Nigeria), though everyone lies but we can çhoose to be different for not telling lies. In developed countries it's not so, when your parents said tell me the truth and I won't punish you they stand by their words by being a good example to their children, but the reverse is the case here in Africa. I think we can all start to tell the truth, let the change begins with you so that we can be a good example to our young ones because the harm lies has caused us is much more than the good. Even our political leaders are not left out, whenever election is approaching they will start telling all manner of lies in the form of campaign. Thanks for sharing anyway.
