Absence-Even Animals can be Missed

A best friend I used to have that I will never forget is cracker. You might be wondering who cracker is 😁 Well, cracker is the name of a dog I used to own when I was still very young or should I say small, like the girl in the picture. A dog is man's best friend afterall. I can't remember how old I was when my mom bought it's mother—Bingo but I know I couldn't have been up to ten years of age.

I found it easier to relate with cracker more than I did with Bingo probably because it was little. It was a cute little dog. I laughed whenever it barked because the voice was not thick or convincing at all. Some months after Cracker was birthed, Bingo died. She was poisoned by God knows who. This made my little cracker motherless. Looking back, I can remember how I felt then—bad. I felt bad because I was not going to see Bingo again and I felt pity for its little puppy**

Cracker was not the only puppy Bingo had; it had five others that were sold shortly after their birth. Bingo was not even the finest but it really stood out. It's brown in colour.

Then Cracker grew into a big dog. Whenever the door was opened, it ran out to meet you. It is always the way it wags its tail for me. It developed some bad traits along the line it was stealing eggs. It was not one or even two, it ate if not more than ten eggs. We had local chickens and even though they had a cage, they preferred to lay eggs outside and not in their cage which gave Cracker the freewill to consume the eggs as it likes.

There is this remarkable incident that I would never forget. We-my mom, my brothers and I were going home one day. We were coming from church. On getting to the house, we discovered that Cracker was barking nonstop. We tried approaching the door but it did not allow us. We tried to make her calm and also reminded her that we were not strangers.

Until my mom brought out her phone and switched on her flashlight and just across us was a big snake. We ran back immediately. Who wouldn't? My dad came and we were able to kill the snake. The snake would have tried to harm at least one of us if it had not been seen on time and killed. I just thank God.

Even though cracker is no longer alive (how it died is a story for another day), I still see it as a tender, loving and the best pet anyone can ever have. This tells us that our pets don't just eat our food or mess up everywhere but they also provide security in the little ways they can and scare off Invaders and thieves.

This is a contest by Emotions and Feelings community and it will be ending soon. I saw it this afternoon and decided to give it a try.

Thanks for reading 😊

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dog. Loving them while they are alive is more important which you did.
Your two dogs are beautiful although I haven't heard of their kind of breed before.

Cracker was quite a character, wasn't he?🙌

We really enjoyed hearing stories like these, because they connect us to our own experiences and help us to appreciate what we have. It reminds us of the good that has happened to us and we can rejoice again.💛

Nice to meet you and that you decided to write. On behalf of the entire community team, we welcome you warmly @mercytosho 😘
