Being Hopeful Is Not Having Expectations

Some may say being hopeful is having having expectations and when that expectation doesn't come to play, one loses hope, becomes weak and tend not to have faith in other aspects of one's life. Well, hope is not having expectations except you don't know what being hopeful is.

My younger sister named Hope once told me something: Not that I want our family to expect so much from me but I want my name to have an effect in whatever I'm doing and our family's future by giving hope and being hopeful about everything.

Well, I do think that hope is something that no human will say he or she haven't had once in his or her life... Being hopeful can be automatic, we find ourselves building hope every single time like:

  • Hoping to see another sunrise
  • Hoping to have our meals no matter how little
  • Hoping for a better tomorrow without being sure of what tomorrow holds for us.

So, my definition of Hope would be

An inbuilt character of humans to want something or have something to lean on without having high expectations.

Why do we need to Hope?

I believe if one loses hope in life, fear creeps in, dreams may die and one may live an unworthy life because one may feel life has nothing to offer anymore. A hopeless person is like a dead person so we must hope even for little things like being alive to see a new day.

@olawalium said something in his post titled Hope - When Your World Falls Apart

Hope comes as a little thing
That brings your fears to the melting point
Revive our dying dreams and becomes a pillar we can lean on

I specially love the last line "Hope becomes a pillar we can lean on" You don't have to hopeful on man or on things... You've got to have hope on the Almighty and yourself. Be mindful of how your future should be and how it is now. You being hopeful to having a bright future is not giving high expectations like hoping to have the impossible. Just have the Almighty and yourself to lean on... That's hope.

Hope And Wishes

They aren't same but they're connected. Hope can be given to oneself, to a fellow man and to our creator but saying a wish is like making a request to an unknown, you wish for things to happen and find yourself hoping for it to come to pass... That's hope with expectations.

Be hopeful but have no high expectations, just have God and yourself to lean on.

I love your sister's mindset... that her name should be used as a beacon for the family to be reminded of hope! hehehe

I've often thought about how we are named and how that can be such a testimony for us hehehe

lovely post, my sweet!

Wow who am I reading from right now? 😳😂 I missed you so much ma'am, hope you're getting better.

And you're right with that thought, our names should have an effect in our lives so it's important that names are given more consideration before giving them to our kids.

Yeah we're all hoping for a lot of things. I'm hoping for a better future, hoping to live a happy life, hoping to achieve my dreams, hoping I'll be able to make myself and my parents proud, hoping I'll be able to surpass my fears, the list just goes on and on.

I agree totally with your definition of hope :

An inbuilt character of humans to want something or have something to lean on without having high expectations.

But I think everyone one sees hope differently, and sometimes high expectations comes in, but it doesn't change the fact that every one always need something to lean on, something to believe in..Hope

This is an amazing one dear

Great Post.. Thanks for sharing.. I am just curious to know something.. From your definition, you said being hopeful doesn't mean you are having high expectations, does this mean that when I have high expectations of becoming someone great, that isn't hope?

I have often heard people say "I hope to become someone great in the future".. Does this mean they don't have high expectations?

You won't be having high expectations when you're putting your hope in God and yourself because when you hope on man to make your dreams come true... You'll get hurt from having such high expectations.

You can as well prove me wrong though, we're all learning 😊

You just came from another angle... Is even when we are putting our hope in God that we should be having high expectations because God isn't man, hence, we must trust him to always make the right decisions for us and so, our expectations must be high.

However, I agree that putting our hope in man can be disastrous and so, one shouldn't have high expectations but that of God is different.

We hope and been hoped everyday thinking that one day it shall be better, but yet we keep on hoping. Hope sometimes comes out not to happen, but gives someone lots of courage to move on with life.

Organizational behavior professor Nir Halevy of Stanford Graduate School of Business, cited in The Value of Hope said of hope, "it’s a future-oriented, positive emotion that often emerges in challenging and difficult circumstances.” So I think you are right that we don't need to have high expectations in order to have hope. We have hope because we need something positive to cling to when the going gets tough. We need a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel to aim for and to give us a reason to keep putting one step in front of the other when it seems like the world is against us. In his article, Ian Chipman also cites the philosopher Baruch Spinoza who said "If there’s nothing to fear, there’s little reason to feel hope". Fear, therefore, causes us either to capitulate or to find strength in hope and as you say, if we give up on hope we allow fear to win. A nice article. I enjoyed your perspective and I love that your sister has such beautiful aspirations for her own purpose in life too. I came to your post via @dreemport
