My Childhood Friend And I - Creative Non-Fiction Prompt

pexels-photo-6941452.jpeg

Nancy had almost everything I didn't have back then but how we still clicked as good friends was amazing to our mates around. What we both had were opposite but were nature's gifts and we didn't let that deprive us of growing our friendship love.

She was body shamed for her body size but I loved it that way because it made her the "Nancy" I knew. I remember telling her never to hate her body size and get rid of it in anyway, as I thought I wouldn't recognize her when that happens. That was the height of my love for her body size because I was so tiny back then.

She had her mum getting literally everything she wanted, dad could do same for me but not as much as I noticed my friend having as he had his other two kids to care for. This still didn't let our friendship love have any obstacle even a little, we kinda complemented each other. We understood at our early age that every person has his or her own special gift from life.

We couldn't go to the same school as her mum preferred a private and expensive school for her only daughter while dad had to at least make sure his three kids were going to school like the other kids since we had only him to cater for our lives even if it meant "The not expensive school faraway".

She wasn't the brightest among the two of us but I didn't let her feel down about it, we studied together and I made sure to share what I know with her since we were both in the same class at different schools. We would bath, eat, take walks and play around together, other kids were jealous of us simply because they couldn't get close to her thanks to her body size.

I guess that was a reason I preferred being with her as it meant, it would be just be the two of us and when my siblings are around as well. We never got tired of playing together, I bet her mum had to make the decision of taking my siblings and I in as her kids too. Thanks to dad's busy work, Nancy would win when she suggests to my dad and her mum that we sleep over at their place, those nights were always fun filled.

Watching cartoons, playing our favourite games and chatting about our favourite topics was our main agenda for every night we spent together. She would share her gifts with me, argue with her mum to buy double of whatever she bought for her and I never give a second thought to share whatever I could share with her... We loved each other even though we were not perfect in love.

She was a nice friend and I can vouch that she'll say the same about me but circumstances didn't let us stay friends for as long as we would have wanted it to be. It's been years since I last saw her but her memories live rent free in my head. The good old days with her still remain my favourite childhood days.

I could picture the moment with you and your friend together and how those night must be for you. It’s surely going to be amazing. We had similar experience too.

And yeah glad you guys understood life at an early stage.

There was this girl I forgot her name. But we call her Turn me on.. because she loves the music. We do things together. She was a close friend. But we missed each other as we relocated.

Hello @merit.ahama,
You have written a lovely tribute not just to your friend, but to friendship.

her memories live rent free in my head

As you describe it, friendship is not consumed. It is not practical. It is not perishable. The loyalty, trust and affection of a true friend last a lifetime, even when physical distance intervenes.

The specifics you offer to illustrate the depth of your friendship work well.

Thank you for sharing this lovely response to the prompt, @merit.ahama. We appreciate that you engage with other authors in the community.

There are just so many beautiful memories we shared with our friends. That no matter how far they go, we'll always remember them.

True friendships with memories that last a lifetime are scarce to come by these days. I'm glad that you still have such beautiful memories about your childhood friend. I hope that someday you too can reconnect and maybe have a happily ever after

Reading this story reminds of my best friend back then in school, Chinedu by name.. But you know, like you were separated from your friend, so was I .. Life has a way of keeping us away from our good friends

I guess a lot of us do have that friend that we are not in touch with anymore... The memory is just there.

You and Nancy had a great childhood friendship. It is a pity that you did not stay as friends. That it s life however. You still have great memories to cherish.
