My Family, Our Inheritance - Creative Non-Fiction Prompt

I am from a family of five with me being the eldest child and first daughter, a position that comes with so many responsibilities even though my family makes it easier for me not to realize so much of it just yet. In my part of the world, our culture mostly favours the first son than the daughter even if the son is the last child of the family.

My position in my family would bring in so much talk if a time would come when material inheritance would have to be shared among us, as more arguments will be to favour my younger brother before my sister and I. There's no wonder why our people act differently to mothers who are unable to birth a male child for their family.

Even though this custom isn't strongly held anymore, there are still cases of people doing all they can to have a male child before anything bad happens. Well, I'm so sure about my family stance on inheritance. Not like we have so much to expect for inheritance since we live a simple life but my family would be perfect example of families who let their inheritance live with them in their lifetime.

Inheritance are mostly given after a lifetime ends but my family and I live with ours and that inheritance is what I call priceless values and Christianity. Dad and mum are good Christians who makes sure their children display good values wherever they find themselves.

I won't say I'm perfect at staying in character as regards to the values I've learnt from them but the fact remains that I'm living with my family's inheritance and this is hoped that it will help my siblings and I cope in whatever life throws at us... I think that is priceless.

Maybe in the future, we would have more to inherit from our parents but for now, all I could say about my family's inheritance is we are happy to be in our family lineage. I inherited mummy's face and body (they say, I'm her photocopy) and my brother inherited his dad's personality (so similar in character with little difference) and all these goes down to us being perfect for each other as a family.

As for the material inheritance, not so much importance are placed on them because one thing I've learnt from my parents is that "Contentment with what we've got and living a worthy life". I've heard dad once worry about what he would be leaving behind for us if he should die anytime and I was like "You're still too young to die but I've learnt so much from you dad"

He has never talked about that since then, I can't read his mind but from his attitude, he is busy building more value in his children than worrying about after his lifetime. The future will take care of itself and my family will live each day as a gift of inheritance from God.

Glad to have good parents who are so caring for us. It’s a blessing. And also coming from an amazing family is a grace from above. We should be grateful for our lineage and do well to leave a great impact for our generations to come.

The greatest inheritance so far is what you talked about here dear friend. Quite ethical it is to imbibe in you this core values, since we lack these in our present generation it is always a great feeling to stand out and be different.
Thanks for sharing this with us dear friend.

Your parents are good role models, and it's great that you have learned important life lessons from them. Inheriting material possessions can be nice, but inheriting good values and a strong sense of contentment is much more important.

Well said, upholding the good values learnt while I build myself to be content with what I have... It's a goal I plan to keep achieving.

Values and virtues are the greatest forms of heritage to be passed down. Sometimes it's not all about material wealth.

Family values are a priceless heritage, in my culture too, they place so much importance on male children which I find unfair, but thank God for civilization, it is gradually dying.

Men and women are all gifts from God.

Yeah, it's amazing what women could bring to the society now... Making the unfair placed importance die down.

What a priceless inheritance you have got, of course you should know that not every parents have time for this, so lucky you 👌. Good values and Christianity is enough to make you a better person to your generation. I am so proud of your parents for living such good inheritance for you and ur siblings...it's now left for you to pass on same to your future children.

You describe your family's heritage as a living legacy. You and your siblings carry in yourselves the lifetime investment of your parents. The future exists in you today. Your father's reward is one that he can see as he sows his good deeds. The future is uncertain, except for the future he is building now, in his children.

This is a lovely tribute to your family and to your parents. Your idea of heritage is inspiring.

I like your story is beautiful, there are two important things in life, which are the family and the values that our parents can instill in us, it is important that you know how to appreciate them.

You and your siblings are a lifetime investment to your parent and selves depending on how you grow the investment. Reading this is convincing that you've grown and still growing the investment. Well done.

Investment! I like the word you used hehe
Children are parents investment which would either make the future better or worse... I can only pray my siblings and I would be great investments to them 😊

I love that your dad do not worry about anything other than the future of his children which I think is a true inheritance he would be living behind which will tell of his good deeds when he finally leaves someday; of course, when he is old!
