My First Job At A Law Firm & An Abusive Boss

You might want to ask the first question, What is a science student doing in a law firm, a first job at that? and my response will be "Life happens" and I think happenings like this are there to teach us to become better in whatever we hope to achieve in life.

Well, if I am to list out some wrong decisions I've made, working at a law firm is one of them. But don't get me wrong, I was super happy when I got the job.

But as they say, You never know what's awaiting you in front but we hope it better be good.

Getting a job at that time was something I felt was important to do since entering the university to continue my studies seemed difficult and I didn't want to just sit around and expect to be fed.

No one pushed me to get a job, I just showed interest that I wanted one so I could go out of the house daily, that was how I got a call from a friend I told and I prepared for an interview and got the job that same day to start the next day.

"I was happy" is an understatement to how I felt that day getting the job.

I was made a secretary alongside a new girl who got employed same day, we were to work together as secretaries of the firm, I did the desk (paper) works and she ran errands. I can bet we were amazing at our jobs even though we both had not done it before aside being computer literates.

We did more than what secretaries would do for our Boss, and I mean, going to parties with him but not to enjoy the party. We acted out servers, errand girls, cleaners and a lot more but we never complained as we were sure our Boss would pay us at the end of the month.

I could tell he was a lawyer that is good at his job with the number of cases he did worked on back then and how busy we get every day but one thing was too obvious and bad for us all in the firm... He was the abusive kind.

He curses, screams and throw stuffs at every chance he got, he was that scary Bossy Boss we see on movies.

At first when he screamed at me, I accepted it was my mistake as I didn't do the work he asked of me well enough so I learnt and work harder so it didn't happen again but it turned out that wasn't the case at all. He never give up a chance to insult and use all the wrong words on myself and fellow colleagues.

Why did I stopped working at the law firm?

It got worse, worse that his words began to sink through my head and made me feel like I was useless and worthless. I began to feel like I wasn't worth the pay he was giving monthly. Thinking back now, that pay was so small but it was huge for a first timer jobber.

But my reason for stopping the job wasn't because of the pay, it was because he began to insult not just myself but my parents who let me have my freedom in working. It might be funny how that made me stopped working but I felt so happy and relieved when I stopped working there.

My other colleagues did say they will stop too but I don't know how that went for them, I just continued to live like I never worked there until I got an admission in that same year I stopped working.

Lessons I learnt from working at the firm?

No much lessons, but I value the experience I got from working in a law firm. I feel I'd be able to last longer in such work environment if I had no Abusive Boss bent on killing my self esteem. I also got to learn social connection, professional courtesy and a lot of law firm terms and working etiquettes.

Would I go back if I had the chance?

I'm very sure even you the reader had just said, I wouldn't go back 😅 I left there to save myself, going back would mean I'm contemplating on emotional suicide. The experience was good but that's it for that, I would rather stay unemployed than work in a work environment as such again.

I was thinking, when did Merit become a lawyer now? I just realised it was before school. I don't think I can ever work in such an environment. Me and my boss will fight one day, 😂

He had no right to abuse his staff, if it were another country he would have been sued. But Nigeria God help us.
If I had to face something like that just know that it is either I abuse him back and work out of the place

That's terrible. You'd think that for someone who is practicing the actual law, he'll have more humanity than that. I'm sure it's such a long time ago and you've probably gotten over hurt but still so sad you went through that Mer mer😂🤗

Someone told me before, "If you aren't happy anymore, will you stay?"
I'm a person who values happiness over money. So if my boss is like that, I would definitely leave on the first day he showed monstrous acts. I don't like being stressed mentally. It penetrates well in my mind and lasts for long.

So what is your job now? Are you happy?

Yeah, it's same with me
I couldn't bear with what his words were doing to my emotions, had to leave.

I don't have an offline job yet, spending on Hive is all I do to earn and it's been fun.
Thanks Janey 😊

Someone like me won't last a day at that firm, omo! Abusive boss? I will just lose it and abuse him back. The only reason why I might keep calm is if I really need the job but if it's one I'm just doing because I want to be leaving the house, then that's the end. I can't be leaving the peace and harmony of my house everyday and be chopping daily insults, you definitely made the right decision when you stopped working for the firm, only desperate people can remain there

You're right, I felt there wasn't a need for me to be bearing up with such when I wasn't forced to find something doing for myself at home.

What's with lawyers and being abusive the one I worked for as a secretary almost turned me to maid
I'll go and fill gas, go to the market, take care of his pet dog, changed plugs and oil in generator.

Go to spare parts and buy items for his car there's no message I didn't go to in this warri. Doing all these along paper work it wasn't easy. They just feel they can abuse their power and abuse you since they are paying you salary.

Why will an employer be insulting for parent, that working environment is too harsh, no one will pray for such

Maybe you can go back if that boss is replaced with a nicer person, one who would respect his or her employees and not insult or abuse them because they are working under him. That is what I will never take. I rather stay unemployed than be under the authority of an abusive person who does not value human relationships and learn how to relate with them. I guess people like them need to read how to win friends and influence people.

Yes o, they need to read the book 😂 their human management skills is so bad. Although I think his own is right from how he has been living even before he became a lawyer, the words just come out so easily 🤦‍♀️

Omoo, what an abusive boss he really was, can I even stand that for a month? I doubt.

The man is an ingrate, I don't know why must employers feel they are doing their employees so much favour forgetting if there is no employee, they won't be able to handle all the workloads.

Insulting employees' parents just shows how mannerless he really is, I love the fact you walked away from such an environment, growing in such atmosphere is difficult.

Insulting my parents was the height of it, I wouldn't have even stayed more than a month if I knew it will get to that extent 😏

Indeed, I do understand how it feels when someone says something hurtful to someone dear to me. It's a good thing you recognize your own value and self-respect and left the daunting environment immediately he crossed his boundaries.

I didn't say anything oooo🙄🙄. Sha the boss needs someone to talk to him like a parent to a child. He lacks manners and still has some learning to do.

Hello, dearest dreemer, it is the start of a new week. I hope you are ready to face Monday like you named it hehe. I waltzed in from #dreemport for I am a #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.

Environments like that are very toxic. I wonder how people could cope with working with such boss. No amount of money is worth destroying my self esteem. I'm so glad you left.
