On A Mission

Greg wasn't the best of his crew, he was of the lowest rank and a bit too lazy for the job but for some reasons yet uncovered by his boss, he was chosen for an adventure that changed his life entirely.

He was at home, having a good time with his wife when a very bright light with loud sounds of guns came through his window, a sign to get him outside the house. As a soldier even though not the most strongest, he jumped up from his bed with so much agility and rushed to take his gun from beside his bed.

He was ready to face anything that was about to happen, he always tend to act strong in the presence of his wife. The wife feeling scared and worried followed Greg behind and very close hoping that it wasn't going to be so bad.

Greg kept trying to calm her down while he remained focus as he walked towards the door. He opened the door, stretched his gun very fast to hit any target he could to save himself and his wife but he was cornered by one of the men before he could take a shot.

The men covered his eyes, wrapped him and took him along with them as the wife watched on with teary eyes out of fear but she recognised one of the men to be her husband's Co worker so she went back inside to wait for her husband's call.

Greg opened his eyes after the tie was removed, found himself in a big space with bright lights that were so bright not to give a shadow of him in the room. Greg screamed so loudly... Where am I? Why am I here? And a voice came out from a speaker fixed to the top which he only got to notice when the voice came out.

You'll be on a mission in few minutes from now, every stage with its own challenge and we hope you scale through or else you die and you'll never be able to see your wife again... The voice said and it sounded like his boss.

But why do I have to go on such a risky adventure? You know I'm not the best with all that, please get me out of here... Greg said even though he knew it was pointless.

See you at the finish line Greg, I believe in you... The boss said as he walked away from the voice speaker to where he could see Greg go through the mission.

Greg knew the time had come, a time he had to go through like his older colleagues but he didn't feel ready for it. It was impossible to break loose from the room so he had to face it and he clouded his mind with the thought of his wife waiting for him at home.

While he was trying to get ready for whatever was coming, a door was opened in front of him. He walked slowly through the door and was shaken when the door closed up against him from the back. His first encounter was a room filled with bad ants and cockroaches he had to walk through to the next door. He also entered a room that was utterly dark with objects almost everywhere.

Without weapons and to the surprise of his boss, Greg scaled through all the missions with the skills he was taught when he first started except the last one where he got stuck. He was to make a decision of which path to choose, he would die if he chose the wrong path.

His boss stood up from his sit hoping and wishing that his favourite would chose the right path, he watched Greg chose the wrong path and let out a tear. Greg walked to an extent on the path he chose and walked back to the beginning again... He felt he chose the wrong path.

Greg began to walk on the other path, his boss was so happy and relieved... He walked for a few minutes and saw himself outside on his own office having all he needed as a senior. His boss came in with a smile to congratulate him and gave him a badge he had always dreamt of having.

His wife finally got a call from him and happily waited for him to return home.

Your story shares how even people who are not the strongest, smartest or best in their field can succeed, @merit.ahama. You added some suspenseful elements, especially that moment at the end when he chooses the wrong path and then reconsiders.

Thank you for sharing your story in The Ink Well, and for reading and commenting on the work of other community members.

That was really surprising. I certainly didn't expect the survivor game-like element in the story. Still, I'm glad the Greg made it and was reunited with his wife.

Excellent story @merit.ahama, it did draw the reader in with curiosity from the beginning, which is a very good writeup. I was hoping and cheering him on so he chose the right door as well hehehe!
