The Promise of Clones and the Problem Within

avatar

I have never had to think about this question even though it sounds like a clever idea, that's because I am not interested in making that a possiblility for me even if one day, it becomes possible and it's presented to me as an option in life. Thinking about it now, I'm tempted to imagine the good side of it but not without seeing the bad side too.

The good side is easy to see that I might appreciate is not having to worry about my time running out. I get to keep building on everything I have and still learning. The mistakes I make will not be wasted since the clone would remember them and do better. I also get to plan life well no matter how many years dreams will take longer.

Another good side is comfort. Losing my body would not feel like the end of my story. The people who loves me would still have me around. Conversations could continue, my work, my voice, my presence would not just stop. In this way, it removes the fear of losing a loved one that many people carry around quietly every day.

But then, the question, is that clone really me, or just a copy that thinks it is me? Even if it has all my memories, it is still another body. Another mind that just started. My current self would still end so it's the clone that exactly continues, not this version of me that is thinking right now. That's more like a replacement and not survival.

Another concern is identity. What if the clone starts to change in ways I wouldn’t? Even with the same memories, new experiences would shape it and over time change differently, what would be the point of trying to “continue” my life? There's also the effect on relationships, will people accept the clone as me, or something feels off?

Looking at both sides, the idea of having a clone starts to feel less like a gift and more like a complicated escape. While it does promises continuity, it doesn’t fully solve the problem of what it means to be alive right now. My best personal choice is simply not getting a clone and it's not because it's impossible but the changes.

I don't like that it could change how I see life in a way I don’t like, I want to live knowing that this version of me matters and I am the only me. I want to know that my choices today are final, and it's what gives them meaning. I want to grow, learn, and make mistakes without thinking there is a backup version waiting to fix everything.

Like I said in a snap with a friend, there is something honest and beautiful about living one life, fully aware that it is limited. It makes small moments count, effort feel real, love go deeper, and this is not something you can just transfer. The idea of a clone is interesting, even tempting, it offers possibility but takes the value of now.

I feel you... getting a clone of yourself is basically giving someone else your identity..
