Stomach ulcers are another name for gastric ulcers, which are painful sores in the stomach lining, stomach ulcer is just a type of existing peptic ulcer disease. Peptic ulcers are ulcers affecting both the stomach and small intestines, they are open sores that develop in the lining of the esophagus, stomach,, or the first part of the small intestine known as the duodenum.

Some people who have peptic ulcers do not often show signs or symptoms, but when the symptoms are shown, upper abdominal pain is often the most common one. Abdominal pain can affect any angle from the navel up to the breastbone, usually following these patterns;

  • Feeling worse when the stomach is empty.
  • Getting worse at night.
  • Temporarily feeling better after eating or after taking an antacid.
  • Comes and goes for days or weeks.

Let's now get back to discussing stomach ulcers, which occur when the thick layer of mucus actively protecting the stomach from digestive juices is reduced, this gives room for the digestive acids to feed on the tissues that are lining the stomach, therefore creating a case for ulcer. Stomach ulcers can be treated easily without stress but it can also get really severe and complicated in a case where there is no appropriate treatment.

Stomach ulcers come with certain associated symptoms, and the symptoms displayed will as well be associated with how severe the stomach ulcer has gotten. The most common symptom is pain or burning sensation felt in the middle of the abdomen between the chest and belly button, usually, when the stomach is empty is when the pain will get really intense and could last for a few minutes but even spread for as long as hours.

Other common signs and symptoms of ulcers are; bloating, vomiting or nausea, pain in the stomach, drastic weight loss, easily feeling satisfied (food wise), acid reflux, pain that would relieve once drink or food has been taken, tarry dark stools, bloody vomit or the one that looks like coffee grounds.

Diagnosing and treating stomach ulcers will depend greatly on how severe it is, just like the signs and symptoms too. In order to diagnose stomach ulcers, the doctor will need to go through the medical history of the patient, this will be done alongside the symptoms and any other medication that is been taking. Some of the available test procedure options include;

  • Barium swallow: The intake of a thick white liquid which is barium, this barium coats the upper gastrointestinal tract, it as well gives the doctor more proper visibility that helps the doctor properly view the stomach and the small intestine on X-rays.

  • Endoscapy(EGDA): This procedure involves a light tube getting inserted into the mouth and into the stomach as well as the first part of the small intestine. This test is basically used for the detection of ulcers, bleeding, and other tissues that may want to appear abnormal.

  • Endoscopic biopsy: Here, a case of stomach tissue is removed for lab analysis. In a lot of cases, breath, stool, or blood test is carried out in order to rule out the presence of H.pylori

Most ulcer cases can be treated from the description of over-the-counter medications, but cases could get really severe and are the only options. It is advisable that when the symptoms of an ulcer begin to show, immediately discuss with your doctor a one-time treatment.

Speaking of complications, when the peptic ulcers are left untreated, it could result in some of these complications; Internal bleeding: Bleeding is one of the complications that can arise from internal bleeding, bleeding can happen as a slow process or severe blood loss that could even result in hospitalization or blood transfusion. Some cases of blood loss may cause bloody or black vomit or stools.

Obstruction: Peptic ulcers in the body can block the passage of food through the digestive tract, causing the individual with cancer to become full very fast, the individual may also lose weight speedily, either through swelling from inflammation or through scarring.

Gastric cancer: According to research, those with H.pylori usually stand an increased chance of getting gastric cancer.
Hole in the stomach wall, peptic ulcers have the ability to eat up and create a hole through the wall of the stomach into the small intestine, creating a strong path of infections in the abdominal cavity.

Common causes of peptic ulcers are;
The bacterium, a - Helicobacter py, is common and it lives in the mucous layer that covers and protects the tissues that line up the stomach. Usually, Helicobacter py will not cause any issues, but it can also cause stomach inflammation of the stomach's inner layer leading to an ulcer.

Constantly using a certain pain reliever, the constant intake of some over-the-counter prescription and pain medications generally called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), these medications will proceed to irritate or inflame the lining of the stomach and the small intestine. The risk of getting peptic ulcer is increased if you consume alcohol, smoke, eat spicy foods, and have untreated stress.

This cancer can be prevented as much as our ability, and the risk of reducing peptic ulcer can be reduced if these strategies are followed;

  • We must learn how to protect ourselves from our infection.
  • Be careful with the pain relief and over-the-counter medications you take, and take with prescriptions, so you don't cause health issues for yourself.

Yeah, it is not always a convenience experience, it is advisable that she keeps her antacids close to her constantly as she tries to get more help from experts depending on how severe her condition is.
