The Ringstraße Walk... Enjoying Architectural Gems of Vienna [EN-DE]
Hello dear Hivers and Wednesday Walkers!
My walk this time had been a tour of the area around the Ringstrasse in the 1st District of Vienna. I took the chance to go to the center when the sun appeared at about lunchtime. It has been raining for weeks, so last Monday, I grabbed the chance to make my short journey just to exercise my leg muscles, and it had been a good tour.
In this post, I am sharing some amazing architectural gems Vienna could offer to those visiting the city. The construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral began during the medieval time... other structures located inside and outside the Ring began its construction by the mid 19th Century.
History of the Vienna Ringstraße (Ring Road)

The Vienna Ring Road (German: Ringstraße, lit. ring road) is a 5.3 km[1] (3.3 mi) circular grand boulevard that serves as a ring road around the historic Innere Stadt (Inner Town) district of Vienna, Austria. The road is located on sites where medieval city fortifications once stood, including high walls and the broad open field ramparts (glacis), criss-crossed by paths that lay before them.It was constructed after the dismantling of the city walls in the mid-19th century. From the 1860s to 1890s, many large public buildings were erected along the Ringstrasse in an eclectic historicist style, sometimes called Ringstraßenstil ("Ring Road style"), using elements of Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture.

I used to work Am Graben, in the building fronting the Green Penthouse on the left of the above image. The city center is always jam packed with tourists, some come as individuals, in groups and by the buses. Almost all important attractions are in the Ringstrasse´s inner and outer areas.
St. Stephen's Cathedral is the main attraction in the city center, it is I should say the heart of Vienna. And tourists would normally visit the cathedral as first in their list of tourist spots. Some visit the catacomb below the church where macabre skulls of pest victims are kept. The catacomb is also the resting place of some noble personalities of the Habsburg Dynasty as well as that of the church.
This cafe is a long standing patisserie shop serving their own made sweets and various coffee flavors, one of which is the Wiener Melange with lots of whipping cream.
Just a few meters away is the U2 Station which will take me back to my district. It has been a lovely walk and I was lucky that it did not rain until I got home. Walking is a good exercise and good for the immune system, let's keep doing it!

They are very imposing, to think that the architects of those times had so much detailed ideas in designing their masterpieces.
