Journey to a Four Day Workweek

Hey Lions,

I've been researching Four Day Workweeks for the past few days, really thinking of the best way to present the idea at my jobs next weekly Team Meeting.

I work with a really strong team, with a really good work ethic. We are deadline and project oriented. No one is going to look at you funny for waltzing in 28 minutes late (unless you have a client waiting for you, or happen to be the receptionist), but I've never seen any individual miss a deadline.

We have missed deadlines as a team, which are followed with deep dives into what could have been done differently. Most of our office policies are a direct result of making sure x doesn't happen again.

For all these reasons, I think my co-workers and I are a great fit for 4 day workweeks.

Here are some of the options I am playing with presenting

  1. Maintain a 40 hour workweek. Work the 80 ours over a 9 day period and have one extra day off every other week

  2. Maintain a 40 hour workweek but work 4, 10 hour days, and have four days of work, and 3 day weekends

  3. Change the work schedule to 32 hour weeks, and work 4, 8 hour days, as long as productivity remains the same. This would be banking on the fact that people would have more "pep in their step" aka be more productive, cause they have to be there less.

At the end of the day, option #1 is probably the one that will work the best for our team. As much as the idea of consistent 4 day weeks, I don't know if I can get behind being at my office for 10 hours. I'd probably spend a couple of them in the conference room watching netflix, or on my couch by the window making fun of the people who stop by the cannabis shop next door (look at their parking! they look so happy when they leave!), which would end up being completely unproductive, and opposite of what I want to propose.

Wish me luck, I'll update you on what we decide.

That's a really productive way to look at a problem and offer solutions. I have worked a 4 day week but with a drop in pay. Another solution may be to switch some days to remote working which makes things nicer too. Let us know how it works out.
