Somlor Proher-Traditional Papaya Soup With Dried Fish 👩‍🍳

The main ingredients in this recipe is Prohok Cambodia’s famous fermented fish paste, the key ingredient of this samlor Proher recipe. Prahok is tricky to find outside Cambodia. However, we can Look for it at an Asian supermarket or grocery store.
When it comes to Proher it reminds me of fresh vegetables that are not chemically treated or processed. Here I show you how to make Somlor Koko using fresh organic vegetables picked right from the garden.

There are even more different given names to this recipe. It is depending on some villages while in my local area we usually call it Somlor Proher.

Today, I’m going to share with you exactly how I learned to make Cambodian sour soup in Cambodia. If you are a fan of vegetables give this recipe a try it with this method.


Ingredients ✍️

  • 1 small green papaya (partially skinned, deseeded, and shredded)
  • Dried fish
  • Lemongrass
  • Ivy leaf
  • Prohok paste
  • Moringa leaves
  • Chili
  • 2 garlic cloves peeled and chopped finely
  • Seasoning 🧂 ( salt, fish sauce, sugar and soup powder )

Instructions 👩‍🍳


Step 1

I start the soup with boiling water in a soup pot, Heat up the pot with high heat until it boiled add 2 cloves of smash garlic to float in the soup and 1 teaspoon of Knorr chicken powder (soup powder).

step 2

Cook prohok - Washing prohok for three time or more than. Then, cook it in the pot and remove it away we only want to take the flavor of Prohok.

Prahok gives dishes a funky salty flavour and plenty of umami. If you can’t find prahok, you can use fish sauce or even shrimp paste in this Somlor Proher recipe. It’s not the same, but it’s the next best thing.


Step 3

After we already prepare the papaya, put it into the soup, adding the dried fish after.

Step 4

Add lemon grass into the pot.simmer for 5-10 minutes, adding a little water if desired.

Step 5

After adding the dried fish, papaya and lemon grass, sugar and fish sauce. Stir it together about 1 minutes.

Step 6

Decrease the heat, when our vegetables is cooked, add fish sauce to taste and then adding the Ivy leaves all over the pot and stir it well.

Step 7

Mix everything in the soup pot about 3 minutes, then add boiling water into the pot, and then cook it with moderate heat until the vegetables are cooked.

Step 8

Remove the lemongrass and our dish is finished, put the soup into the bowl.

Somlor Proher is actually one of the most beloved Cambodian soups, Samlor Proher is rich in both flavors and nutrition. It’s pretty much a vegetarian dish ready to go! If you’d like some meat though, then it’s fish you’ll be expecting. This recipe is really perfect for serving it with rice.

This fish can cook with almost any type of, but most of the times it's a hearty soup made from catfish which we need to grill it and dry. You can be as creative as you can but this dish can not miss 2 things: prahok - a type of fermented fish sauce & Ivy leaves, the main vegetable in this recipe.

That soup definitely looks delicious. It is somewhat similar to my cooking where I use fried fish instead of dried. I also long Moringa and Papaya, and with that being said, I am going to try it out. Good afternoon!
