The act of Procrastinating have led to so many regrets and failures, sometimes it seems impossible to let go of it. When we procrastinate we accumulate our problems which makes them appear too heavy or scary to handle. Procrastination makes your goals appear as wishful thinking because it has been accumulated to the point it seems unrealistic to accomplish. But how can an individual avoid procrastinating, being ignorant or the feeling of laziness towards his or her responsibilities/goals?

I guess you also have an experience of how procrastination has affected you in one way or the other (just as it has affected me). If you are struggling just like me to get rid of this bad habit then stick with me as I share some of the findings from my research.

PROCRASTINATION:

Procrastination is the act of postponing a scheduled activity despite knowing the negative consequences it might lead to in the future.

Procrastination is often regarded as a negative behaviour due to its negative effects on an individual’s creativity, productivity and self-esteem.

Although procrastination is not always bad since it helps us avoid some unnecessary activities that might have negative outcomes, it can be dangerous when we allow it hinder us from performing a task, taking care of responsibilities and achieving a goal.

WHY DO WE PROCRASTINATE?

As I said earlier, procrastination help’s us avoid some activities or task that might lead to negative outcomes but that’s not the only reason we procrastinate.
We procrastinate when an activity or task seems too difficult for us.
We often postpone or try to avoid activities or tasks we find unenjoyable.
We procrastinate when our goals are too heavy or seems impossible to achieve.
We also tend to postpone activities that won’t bring immediate benefits or gratifications.
It is very easy to procrastinate and find reasons why we should not engage in some activities even when it is for our benefit. So, how can we overcome this bad behaviour?

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING

To stop procrastinating we must stop the habits that leads to procrastination, some of the ways we can do that includes;

Set Realistic Goals:

You need to be aware of the habits and thoughts that makes you procrastinate. One of those habit is setting unrealistic goal. So, to avoid procrastinating you must set goals that are realistic and achievable, by doing so you encourage or boost your self-confidence towards achieving the goal.

Seek Help:

Sometimes fear of failure may hinder you from pursuing a goal. When that happens I suggest you seek help. You also have to evaluate yourself, know your strengths and your weaknesses and set goals or priorities accordingly.

Be Organised:

Structure your daily activities in a way it allows you to concentrate. Too many activities can lead to loss of interest which is a major cause of procrastination. Modify your environment in a way it motivates you towards attaining your goal by keeping it neat and minimising noise and other forms of distraction.

Set Deadlines:

Proper time management will help you achieve your goal at a steady pace. So, make a to-do list and set a deadline for each activity. Don’t forget to keep it simple and realistic. If an activity exceeds the set deadline do not give-up, just make sure you accomplish one task before moving on to the other.
Always keep track of your progress as this may serve as a reminder to show that you are growing (a boost to your self-esteem).

Reward yourself:

Reward yourself after achieving each goal by doing something you love, take a walk, eat, watch a movie or sleep, doing so will help you achieve other goals easily. You can make a boring activity enjoyable by adding other activities you love to it, just don’t get distracted.

Self-discipline:

If you have self-discipline then you might not be having this issue of procrastination. The truth is, for you to practice any of the aforementioned steps, you must have self-discipline. Take your time, don’t rush it.

Self-evaluation:

You have to know you strengths and your weaknesses. If you can’t keep up with a rigid schedule then don’t make one, if you can only work at night then work only at night. You have to know what you want, what you need and what you are lacking, live according to those standards and not under the weight of societal standards.

Knowing these steps won’t make you stop procrastinating rather, practicing them will. Remember, Action Speaks Louder Than Words.

If you have struggled with and have overcome the act of procrastination, please do well to leave a piece of advice on how you overcame it?
Never give up, do not settle.

To me is about recognizing our own preferences. For example, I rarely keep my intentions in writing. Only in extreme situations, or to know exactly what is needed to do or buy, I write a detailed note about it. Otherwise, it is easier for me to go with the flow. Yes, sometimes something gets lost or forgotten, but that is also a sign that such pending issue was not that important, or that deep inside I didn't want to do it, so why bother ;)
