An Exciting Journey Through the Saxon Chronicles [EN/PT]

Hey guys! I'm back after finishing The Saxon Stories series, and I can only say that it was one of the best sagas I've ever read! Actually, I had read this series before and ended up rereading it to refresh my memory of the story, after the last book was released. The Saxon Stories is a good choice for those who like historical fiction, Vikings, and bloody battles!

The story begins with Uhtred, a young Saxon captured by the Vikings during an attack on his kingdom. Uhtred, the son of one of the lords of that kingdom, is raised by the Danes and becomes a warrior, fighting alongside the Vikings in their forays through England. Uhtred is a warrior torn between his love for the Vikings and his duty to his nation and king, his loyalty is constantly tested.

Throughout the 13 books, we follow Uhtred on his journey away from his lands most of the time, but he always dreams of regaining his lands stolen by his treacherous uncle, facing powerful enemies, kings, and political skirmishes. For me, Uhtred's biggest rivalry was the religious conflicts. He had his spiritual side turned to pagan culture, an influence of the Vikings with whom he lived for so long. While fighting for the English, he was constantly urged by Christian priests for being a pagan, and in these frictions, he cultivated many enemies for possessing a different faith.

Although he was hated by many Englishmen for having decided to fight alongside the Vikings, Uhtred is a formidable warrior and a warlord, very important for the English nation that suffered from invasions. Despite bothering many Englishmen, Uhtred captivated great relationships, such as Father Beocca, Aethelflaed (the king's sister and lady of Mercia), and, of course, King Alfred. Uhtred's relationship with the king is full of ups and downs, love and hate for many pages, even for the reader. It is a mixture of hatred and admiration, and we long for King Alfred to give Uthred the credit he deserves for his importance to England (something that never happens). There are countless important characters that we will encounter throughout the book, and I would gladly talk about them for much longer, but let's move on to other topics in the story!

The Saxon Stories are engaging because of their battles. Bernard Cornwell has a special talent for describing the tactics and strategies used by armies of that time. Each battle is narrated in an exciting way, and the details remain in our memories as if we were present on the famous shield walls. We feel the tension, fear, and the smell of the warriors' wine breath as they crap themselves when two shield walls collide with each other. We hear the screams as the soldiers' guts are coming out of their bodies. The smell of blood permeates the air, and crows fly over the battlefield, waiting for the banquet that is always to come. These are the memories we keep after reading a book from The Saxon Stories.

At times, the story may seem slow, with quieter moments that give our minds a break after the battles. However, these slower moments are equally important as they involve political conflicts to be resolved, plots to be planned, and we are in anticipation of the next step Uhtred will take.

We travel with Uhtred through most of the four kingdoms: Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. These kingdoms were divided, and it was King Alfred's dream to see them united. This dream was only realized much after his death, by his grandson Aethelstan, which was supported by Uhtred. And this achievement was only completed in the last book of the saga, with Uhtred already old, but still a warlord.

As we can see, we follow Uhtred's entire life, from when he was just a boy watching his fortress be stolen to becoming an elder of war. Through his eyes, we witness many battles fought, conflicts, and finally, an England united by the dream of a king.

Finally, The Saxon Stories is a book series that I recommend with all my heart. I'm sure you'll fall in love with this exciting journey. I would like to talk more about everything, but then I would have to write a book about it! I hope this brief review is helpful in providing enough information for you to enjoy this story as well.

The author, Bernard Cornwell, is a master in the art of writing historical fiction. He does an excellent job of recreating life in England during the Viking invasions, using a fictional character as the narrator. I am a great admirer of this author's work and have read other works he has written. Now, I am starting The Sharpe Adventures and will soon bring some content about this other series!

Na verdade, já tinha lido essa série antes e acabei relendo para relembrar a história, depois que o último livro foi lançado. Crônicas Saxônicas é uma boa escolha para quem gosta de ficção histórica, Vikings e batalhas sangrentas!

A história começa com Uhtred, um jovem saxão capturado pelos vikings durante um ataque em seu reino. Uhtred, filho de um dos senhores daquele reino, é criado pelos dinamarqueses e se torna um guerreiro, lutando ao lado dos vikings em suas investidas pela Inglaterra. Uhtred é um guerreiro dividido entre o amor pelos vikings e o dever com sua nação e rei, sua lealdade é constantemente testada.

Ao longo dos 13 livros, acompanhamos Uhtred em sua jornada longe de suas terras a maior parte do tempo, mas que sempre sonha em recuperar suas terras roubadas pelo tio traidor, enfrentando inimigos poderosos, reis e escaramuças políticas. Para mim, a maior rivalidade de Uhtred era os conflitos religiosos. Ele tinha seu lado espiritual voltado para a cultura pagã, uma influência dos vikings com quem conviveu por tanto tempo. Enquanto lutava pelos ingleses, era constantemente impelido pelos sacerdotes cristãos por ser um pagão, e nesses atritos cultivou muitos inimigos por possuir uma fé diferente.

Apesar de ser odiado por muitos ingleses por ter decidido lutar ao lado dos vikings, Uhtred é um guerreiro formidável e um senhor das guerras, muito importante para a nação inglesa que sofria com as invasões. Apesar de incomodar muitos ingleses, Uhtred cativou grandes relacionamentos, como padre Beocca, Aethelflaed (irmã do rei e senhora da Mércia) e, claro, o rei Alfredo. A relação de Uhtred com o rei é cheia de altos e baixos, de amor e ódio por muitas páginas, até para quem está lendo. É uma mistura de ódio e admiração, e ansiamos pelo rei Alfredo conseguir dar os devidos créditos pela importância que Uthred possui para a Inglaterra (algo que nunca acontece). São inúmeros personagens importantes que vamos encontrar no decorrer do livro, e ficaria aqui por muito mais tempo falando sobre eles, de bom grado, mas vamos prosseguir com outros tópicos da história!

As Crônicas Saxônicas são envolventes por suas batalhas. Bernard Cornwell tem um talento especial para descrever as táticas e as estratégias usadas pelos exércitos daquela época. Cada batalha é narrada de forma emocionante, e os detalhes ficam em nossas memórias como se estivéssemos presentes nas famosas paredes de escudos. Sentimos a tensão, o medo e o fedor do bafo de vinho dos guerreiros enquanto se cagam quando duas paredes de escudos se chocam uma contra a outra, escutamos os gritos enquanto as tripas dos soldados estão saindo de seus corpos. O cheiro de sangue permeia o ar e corvos sobrevoam o campo de batalha, esperando pelo banquete que sempre está por vir. São essas memórias que guardamos após ler um livro das Crônicas Saxônicas.

Em alguns momentos, a história pode parecer arrastada, com momentos mais brandos que dão um descanso para nossa mente após as batalhas. No entanto, esses momentos mais lentos são igualmente importantes, pois envolvem conflitos políticos a serem resolvidos, tramas a serem planejadas, e ficamos na expectativa do próximo passo que Uhtred irá tomar.

Viajamos com Uhtred por boa parte dos quatro reinos: Wessex, Nortúmbria, Ânglia Oriental e Mércia. Esses reinos estavam divididos, e era o sonho do rei Alfredo vê-los unidos. Esse sonho só foi realizado muito depois de sua morte, pelo seu neto Aethelstan, que contou com o apoio de Uhtred. E essa conquista foi concluída apenas no último livro da saga, com Uhtred já velho, mas ainda um senhor da guerra.

Como podemos perceber, acompanhamos toda a vida de Uhtred, desde quando era apenas um garoto vendo sua fortaleza ser roubada até ele se tornar um ancião da guerra. Através dos olhos dele, testemunhamos muitas batalhas travadas, conflitos e, finalmente, uma Inglaterra unida pelo sonho de um rei.

Por fim, Crônicas Saxônicas é uma série de livros que recomendo de todo o meu coração. Tenho certeza de que você vai se apaixonar por essa jornada emocionante. Gostaria de falar mais sobre tudo, mas aí teria que escrever um livro sobre o assunto! Espero que esta breve resenha seja útil para fornecer informações suficientes para que você também possa desfrutar desta história.

Ele faz um excelente trabalho ao recriar a vida na Inglaterra na época das invasões vikings, usando um personagem fictício como narrador.
