More than uncles [EN/PT]

Blessed are those who have a large, extended family. How wonderful it is to see a house full of people! Of course, as long as there is unity, the size of the family does not really matter. Some families are made up only of parents and children, while in others, things extend to grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and other relatives. In some cases, it is just a mother and her child. I think there is a different kind of joy in a house full of people. My uncles have always been very present in my life, and I am the kind of person who truly enjoys being close to family, spending weekends together, whether with grandparents, cousins, or uncles. But are times changing?

Well, here in Latin America, it is common for families to be large compared to other parts of the world, such as Europe or the United States. At least that is the impression I have, largely because of movies, which end up being my main point of comparison. I think it is not only in Brazil, but throughout Latin America, that families tend to be larger, and I believe this is something deeply cultural, connected to big celebrations, togetherness, family gatherings, conversations, and plenty of food around the table. But one thing has been catching my attention, and honestly, I have the feeling that this may even be a tradition with its days numbered. People are having fewer children, fewer siblings, and families that were once large and extended are becoming smaller and smaller.

I think things may become a little sad after a few generations. Fewer people may mean less joy and fewer celebrations. But, well, there is one thing I can say: I am blessed because I have five wonderful uncles, good people who became father figures to me, since I did not have a present father in my life. My uncles were truly like fathers to me, hardworking people who taught me from an early age to be honest and dedicated, to fight for the things I want, and to work hard to achieve them without stepping on anyone along the way. I have always had a great relationship with my uncles, and I have incredible memories of my childhood with them. They were the ones who taught me how to fish, ride a bicycle, play soccer, and perhaps everything I know today has been influenced by them in some way. They played a major role in shaping the person I am today and also helped fill the void my father left behind.

My family owns a very large piece of land, and everyone in the family, all my uncles and their families, lives in the same place. It has always been that way. So imagine how much closeness there is between everyone and how united we can be. Unfortunately, I no longer live with my mother and I am not as close to my uncles as I used to be, but I always try to make time to see them whenever I visit my mother. Besides my uncles, I have my cousins, who are considered like siblings. So I think we really did a good job here in this family. We love one another deeply, and everyone has a meaningful place in each other's lives.

I would really like my son to have this same experience, but I only have one sibling. Still, he is not exactly lacking in uncles and aunts, because his mother has five other siblings. Maybe in the future this will really become less common, and my son will be enjoying something that is becoming a kind of temporary exception, but the trend does seem to be that families are getting smaller.

Well, I like things the way they are, and I would not trade all these people in my family for anything else in the world. I feel blessed to have so many incredible people in my life, with such strong values, people who helped me become who I am today. My roots are simple, but they are strong. I feel embraced, and I will never be a truly lonely person. Family is everything, and the bigger, the better!

Sinto-me abraçado e nunca serei uma pessoa solitária. A família é tudo e, quanto maior, melhor!
