Exploring the island of Kefalonia from beach to beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธโ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ

(Edited)

Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian, but for sure is one of my favourite Greek islands. I was amazed by the breath-taking landscape, the exotic beaches and picturesque fishing villages.

img_1943_mirtos_.jpg

It is well known that Greek islands have many beautiful beaches and fabulous sea. Maybe the beaches in Kefalonia were even more beautiful to me because of the steep cliffs just beyond the shore. Quickly you will notice, that weโ€™ve spent the majority of your time on the beaches, but of course we had the chance also to see some other sights.

Fiscardo is a colourful village located on the northern part of the island, overlooking Ithaca โ€“ the mythical home of Homerโ€™s hero, Odysseus. The village is very popular and attracts almost every visitor on the island. I really liked the lively atmosphere and the excellent taverns offering fresh fish. Many villages on the island were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake. Fiscardo is one of the few that survived, that is why many houses still have their traditional local colours. In recent years, celebrities such as Madonna, Tom Hanks and Nicholas Cage have visited Fiskardo.

img_1956.jpg

Next to Fiscardo, in my opinion, is located one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Emblisi beach.

img_1974_emblisi.jpg

img_1975.jpg

One of the most popular and loved beaches of Kefalonia is Antisamos. It is โ€œfully equippedโ€ for tourists, but what attracts the most are the white pebbles and the great blue water. It is a very popular spot for snorkelling but also for scuba divers, since there is Roman shipwreck offshore. My wife also reminded me that some scenes from the movie Captain Corelliโ€™s Mandolin (2001) were taken on this beach (I didn't dare ask, which film is this ๐Ÿ˜Š).

img_2060.jpg

Of course, we couldnโ€™t skip Myrtos Beach. This beach was considered one of the greatest in the world. It is a great beach, but I think that what most impressed me was the view from the top. The white beach drops into different blue variations of the sea. Driving down to the beach offers you many opportunities to admire the beauty of this beach.

The island of Kefalonia also hides its natural beauty underground. One of them is the small Drogarati Cave. This natural wonder was formed 150 million years ago. It is a nice stop on your way around the island, but honestly nothing special and can't be compared to other more famous caves.

img_2008.jpg

img_2015.jpg

img_2019.jpg

On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised by Melissani Cave. This cave is open to the sky and there is a lake inside the cave. You can take a boat trip on the lake and when the sunlight enters from the top the colours of the waters are amazing.

Assos is a small and charming village, built on a small peninsula. It hosts only a small number of inhabitants. You will be able to admire the traditional architecture, for sure you will like the surrounding pebbled beaches and the peaceful landscape. Nearby you will also find the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle.

img_1980_asos.jpg

img_1981.jpg

img_1982.jpg

We passed by Kipoureon Monastery. It is an incredibly scenic place that was built right on the edge of the cliff. Driving around the island we have the opportunity to admire many great views (even directly from our car) ๐Ÿ˜Š.

During this hot summer days, we also witnessed a small fire, which was quickly extinguished by the dedicated firefighters.

Since we chose Kefalonia for our summer vacation, we did visit many of the island beaches. Sharing with you a quick overview of the beaches:

Petani beach is located on the peninsula of Paliki. Sandy beach with huge cliffs almost to the sea shore. The water deepens quickly and Iโ€™ve read that there are large waves on this beach, but when weโ€™ve visited it, it was very calm.

Skala beach is a very long and quite large stretch of sandy beach. Lots of activities and many options for boat excursions.

img_1881.jpg

img_1887.jpg

Lourdas beach is a beautiful white beach with a great combination of crystalline waters and stunning mountain backdrop.

Santa Barbara beach, another beach that stands out for its crystal-clear emerald waters.

img_1917_santa_barbara.jpg

We stayed in the south of the island, near the town of Lakithra, in a nice small resort with a sandy beach next to it.

Enumerating all these beaches (even if Iโ€™m writing and not talking ๐Ÿ˜Š) made me thirsty, and just remembered that I canโ€™t finish this post without spending a few words about wine โ€œrobolaโ€. The winemaking tradition in Kefalonia dates back to Neolithic. On Kefalonia you will find a Greek grape variety, robola. The wine is light and citrusy white. Cheers!

Hi @giorgakis, thanks for your comments and for stopping by! It was a really wonderful holiday on this beautiful island, as you can see in the photos ๐Ÿ˜Š I agree with you, Assos is a really beautiful village that we visited. We were all very impressed by it, and the photos in the post prove it. But I disagree with you on the size of the island. I don't take a tape measure with me on holiday, but I look for information on the Internet. All the (more or less) official websites say that Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea. Also Google agrees with them ๐Ÿค” See you around ๐Ÿ‘

Wowwww!! I canโ€™t explain how useful this post has been for me!
I was doing sone research on which greek islands to visit next monthโ€ฆ of course Mykonos and Santorini are incredibly expensive and will probably be a huge mess when it comes to people, so all this information has been what I needed in this exact moment! Haha

Wonderful job, the pictures, the data, everything! Congrats on such amazing job!

PS: Is there any other not-so-touristic greek island you would recommend?

Hi @phendx, I almost blushed from your compliments ๐Ÿ˜‰! I'm glad you liked my post and found it useful ๐Ÿ˜‹ Let me answer you, I also really liked the island of Lefkada. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to write a post about it yet. You can also read my post about the island of Chios. A little less touristy, in my opinion, was Karpathos. You can read about it in my post here. I hope I was helpful, the choice is yours ๐Ÿ˜Š See you around!

Wow, looks like you had an amazing time there. And so many beautiful beaches. Although it kind of looks like somewhere more stone than sand. Is this impression true?

Love this picture especially with the colourful clearly defined contrast between the shore and the sea:

Simply spectacular: I was speechless.

Perhaps the most internationally known islands of Greece are the islands of Mykonos and Santorini.

What you show us in the photos is wonderful, it makes you fly there. I hope someday I can visit those wonderful places.

I have wonderful memories of Greece. I was in Thessaloniki and it fascinated me. The people were very kind to foreigners. Few of them spoke English but we understood each other by signs....

Happy day to you @miljo76

The drogarati cave's image almost made me think it's a gold mine because of the lighting ๐Ÿคญ.

BTW the beaches are super cool, look at the ocean blue, it's just a good spot to cool off on a very sunny day. Lovely images๐Ÿ’™

Especially in winter, there will be less tourists on the beach and more space on the beach for me ๐Ÿ˜€. You know what they say, I'd rather have a cold day in Greece than a warm day at work ๐Ÿคฃ.

That's hilarious! I totally agree with that notion ๐Ÿคญ. We all enjoy vacation ๐Ÿคฃ. If there was nothing like money in this world, no one would even stress๐Ÿคฃ.
