Dolphins have extremely soft and delicate skin. Their skin renews itself every 2 hours approximately, therefore, every 2 hours they practically have baby skin, very soft.

These curious facts are some of the ones we learned when we visited Waterland, a water park in Margarita Island, Venezuela, whose main attraction is the dolphins.

The entrance fee to live the experience of swimming with dolphins is $40 per person, for about half an hour. In my opinion, this cost is understandable due to the exclusivity of the experience. I mean: not everywhere you have that opportunity.

The whole protocol is very well delimited: when you arrive at the park and cancel your ticket, you must wait a few minutes while they prepare everything for the experience. In that time, you can walk through the different areas of the park, and see and learn about other animals. For example: we saw the macaws, which are beautiful and sublime colorful birds that I love, and you have the opportunity to interact directly with some of them by placing them in your arms and giving them seeds.

We saw flamingos, turtles, pelicans, and some other birds that are typical in the area. In the park, the guides explain that all the fauna found there has been rescued from other institutions where they were not well cared for, or from the beaches.

In the case of dolphins, some have even been born inside the park. One of them has a curious name: Venezuela.

After waiting, they invite the whole group of the day to go to a meeting area where they put on life jackets and give you all the instructions.

For example, you cannot touch the dolphins directly with your fingers, but with the palm of your hand. This is to avoid hurting their delicate skin with your nails. You also cannot use rings or accessories, for the same reason. Also, the use of sunscreen and other substances on the skin is restricted so as not to contaminate the dolphins' waters.

And, of course, you cannot do anything concerning the dolphins such as approaching or touching them without the trainers' authorization.

All this is to avoid problems with the dolphins or hurting them and to control the various groups of people who want to experience the dolphins every day.

When we entered the pool, I noticed that the water was salty. I thought it was obvious because we are talking about dolphins, whose natural habitat is the sea.

And suddenly, I was within the same space, at a very small distance, of an animal that I had always seen on television since I was a little girl. It felt very strange and touching at the same time. On the other hand, in the back of my mind, I was thinking that I would like these dolphins and all these animals to live where they should: in the sea, and their natural habitat. However, in some cases it is a bit difficult to reintegrate them, as there are some of them born inside these pools, so releasing them into the sea could be dangerous for them.

You quickly realize that these dolphins have a close relationship with their trainers. I guess they have done the same acts thousands of times and they know how to do everything perfectly. They understand the timing, the sequences, the trigger stimuli, everything.

They jump when asked, spin, do hoop tricks, swim under the group's hands so they can touch them, and even sing and dance with people. For example, the group was asked to sing a random song, and it was impressive how the dolphin recognized the rhythm and sang on the beat. Also, the trainers would ask us to spin around in one spot, and the dolphin would imitate us. In addition, they amusingly show the parts of their long body for the instructors to teach us. For example, the instructors talk about the dolphins' tails, and they show their tails above the surface of the water for all of us to see.

Also, you have the opportunity to have the dolphin swim around the pool with you. Just by carefully grabbing them by the dorsal fin, and the dolphin carries you. This is known as dragging.

While all this was going on, I wondered how many hours of work it takes for an animal like this to learn all that. I was very intrigued by the methodology and the day-to-day work of these trainers.

They were always very kind and ready to help and clarify all doubts. Some of them told me that they had no idea about this world until they got a job in the park, and little by little the dolphins themselves were teaching them more than they were teaching the dolphins.

At the end of the experience, the whole group says goodbye to the dolphins, we leave the pools and take a shower. A few hours later, the organization sends you the professional videos and photos of the experience to your email. Of course, once in the pool area with dolphins, it is not allowed to take pictures. This is taken care of by the staff.

In conclusion, it is a unique experience. Honestly, I would not do it again for more personal reasons. But, all in all, it is something you only experience once.

Los delfines tienen una piel extremadamente suave y delicada. De hecho, su piel se renueva cada 2 horas aproximadamente, por tanto, cada 2 horas tienen prácticamente piel de bebé, muy suavecita.

Estos datos curiosos son algunos de los que aprendimos cuando estuvimos en Waterland, un parque acuático en la isla de Margarita, Venezuela, cuyo atractivo principal son los delfines.

La entrada para vivir la experiencia de nadar con delfines, tiene un costo de $40 por persona, por una media hora aproximadamente. Costo que, a mi parecer, puede ser entendible debido a la exclusividad de la experiencia. Me refiero: no en todas partes tienes esa oportunidad.

Todo el protocolo está muy bien delimitado: cuando llegas al parque y cancelas tu entrada, debes esperar unos minutos mientras preparan todo para la experiencia. En ese tiempo, puedes recorrer los distintos espacios del parque, ver y aprender sobre otros animales. Por ejemplo: vimos a las guacamayas, que son coloridas aves preciosas y sublimes que a mí me encantan, y tienes la oportunidad de interactuar directamente con algunas posándolas en tus brazos y dándoles semillas.

Vimos flamencos, tortugas, pelícanos y algunas aves más que son típicas en la zona. En el parque, los guías te explican que toda la fauna que allí se encuentra ha sido rescatada de otras instituciones donde no se les daba buen cuidado, o de las playas.

En el caso de los delfines, algunos incluso han nacido dentro del parque. Uno de ellos tiene un curioso nombre: Venezuela.

Luego de la espera, invitan a todo el grupo del día a pasar a un área de encuentro donde te colocan los chalecos salvavidas y te dan todas las instrucciones.

Por ejemplo, no puedes tocar a los delfines directamente con los dedos, sino con la palma de la mano. Esto para evitar lastimar su delicada piel con las uñas. Tampoco puedes utilizar anillos o accesorios, por la misma razón. También, el uso de bloqueador y otras sustancias en la piel está restringido para no contaminar las aguas de los delfines.

Y, por supuesto, no puedes hacer nada respecto a los delfines como acercarte o tocarlos sin la autorización de los entrenadores.

Todo esto para evitar problemas con los delfines o lastimarlos, y para controlar a los varios grupos de personas que desean vivir la experiencia cada día.

Cuando entramos a la piscina, me di cuenta de que el agua era salada. Pensé que era algo obvio porque hablamos de delfines, cuya habitat natural es el mar.

Y de repente, yo estaba dentro del mismo espacio, a una pequeñísima distancia, de un animal que siempre había visto en la televisión desde chiquita. Se sentía muy extraño y conmovedor a la vez. Por otra parte, en el fondo de mi cabeza pensaba que me gustaría que estos delfines y todos estos animales viviesen donde deberían: en el mar, y en su hábitat natural. Sin embargo, para algunos casos es un poco difícil la reinserción, ya que hay algunos de ellos han nacido dentro de estas piscinas, por lo que lanzarlos al mar pudiese ser peligroso para ellos.

Rápidamente te das cuenta de que estos delfines tienen una estrecha relación con sus entrenadores. Supongo han hecho los mismos actos miles de veces y saben hacer cada cosa perfectamente. Entienden los tiempos, las secuencias, los estímulos detonadores, todo.

Saltan cuando se les pide, giran, hacen trucos con aros, nadan bajo las manos del grupo para poderlos tocar, e incluso cantan y bailan con las personas. Por ejemplo, al grupo se le pedía cantar una canción al azar, y era impresionante cómo el delfín reconocía el ritmo y cantaba en el compás. También, los entrenadores pedían que diéramos vueltas en un mismo punto, y el delfín nos imitaba. Además, muestran divertidamente las partes de su largo cuerpo para que los instructores nos las enseñen. Por ejemplo, los instructores hablan de la cola de los delfines, y ellos muestran su cola por encima de la superficie del agua para que todos la veamos.

También, tienes la oportunidad de que el delfín te lleve nadando a lo largo de la piscina. Tú lo tomas cuidadosamente de la aleta dorsal, y el delfín te lleva. A esto se le conoce como arrastre.

Mientras todo esto pasaba, yo me preguntaba cuántas horas de trabajo implica que un animal como este aprenda todo eso. Me intrigaba mucho la metodología y el día a día de trabajo de estos entrenadores.

Ellos siempre fueron muy amables y prestos para ayudar y aclarar todas las dudas. Algunos me dijeron que no tenían ni idea de nada de este mundo hasta que consiguieron trabajo en el parque, y poco a poco los mismos delfines les iban enseñando a ellos, más de lo que ellos les enseñaban a los delfines.

Al finalizar la experiencia, todo el grupo se despide de los delfines, salimos de las piscinas y nos duchamos. Algunas horas más tarde, la organización te envía a tu correo electrónico los videos y fotos profesionales de la experiencia. Eso sí, una vez en el área de las piscinas con delfines, no está permitido tomar fotos. De esto se encarga el personal.

En conclusión, es una experiencia única. Honestamente, yo no volvería a hacerla por motivos más personales. Pero, en definitiva, es algo que se vive solo una vez.
