Days are Gone

Bread and Jelly is the perfect combo; it has been one of my favorite snacks since my childhood. My mother would always prepare them for us; I would spread my hands to give a little bit of jelly to have without bread. The more I take, the more I want. So she would hurriedly prepare for us and take that jar away, hahaha. My brother and I would bring out that jar when she wouldn't be around and have our hearts filled. That was a daily life incident as long as that particular jar is not empty.

I still remember the day when I just had a quarrel with my brother over a toy, so we won't talk. Suddenly I remembered that jar of orange jelly and went toward that, but the problem was that I couldn't open the jar; it was tighter than my capabilities to open. I wasn't able to open it, nor would my brother help as we had just had a fight. Instead, he told my mother that I was eating that jelly secretly. When we were in the midst of a clash, these kinda complaints were normal, I did too, many times, and I used to dig crimes from the past and put him in difficult situations mostly, hehe.

Yeap, I was caught; my innocent eyes were pleading with her to open that jar for me. She laughed at seeing me as I was caught, they both did, and then again, she opened that jar for me and gave me a spoon, told both of us to complete it as our father had already brought another one. Hearing this, our disputes faded away within a few seconds, and we finished the jar within a short time. Golden days!

That was a story from my childhood, many years have passed. Now I can open all the jars, but the enthusiasm is missing. Now, rarely I would pick that jar and have it.

So, I was on my chair, busy with my stuff. Suddenly my mother entered my room with a jar in her hand. Nope, that wasn't any of those orange jelly jars; it's a normal one that is a part of her kitchen stuff. She couldn't open that jar as it was stuck very tight so she brought that to me to help her out. Yeap, I felt that it was tighter than usual. Well, I opened that for her, and she left, and that was when those memories started flashing in my mind. I was smiling a little bit on remembering those memories.

How fast time changes! Once, we used to see her opening those jars for us as they were beyond our strength, and now, the clock is ticking in the opposite direction. With time, they would start to depend on us just like we did, and we must care for them the same way they did in our childhood.

They say that's how life goes on, like a wheel that never stops revolving.

Beautiful post minhaj! The wheels have indeed come full circle hasn’t it!

Speaking of jams, I never was a very big fan of it. I'd prefer nocilla or nutella ober jam all the time. But there's something about blueberry jams! I just loved it, even as an adult I will often buy it if I see it in supermarkets. It's quite difficult to find though.

Nocilla all day bhai, was addicted to it, me and my younger brothers. But Nocilla is so expensive and rare nowadays, it used to be cheap and affordable, unlike the other alternatives. Any local general store you'd visit, Nocilla would always be present on the shelf.

I was a sucker for the chocolate part of nocilla. The vanilla portion, meh! We used to fight over the chocolate part all the time and almost always the chocolate used to be over and the vanilla portion remained untouched 😂

It's gotten very expensive now and nutella is more available than nocilla - although I don't mind nutella either!

I bet every deshi family can relate to this. 😂 But I did like the white part though, it wasn't bad, as I got older I started to like it more and more. 🤔

Yep, it's sad, Nocilla used to be king in our country. Now people have become more "posh" and would rather avoid Nocilla.

ayeee!!!! what a wholesome memory!!!

Those who have siblings can easily relate to your story, no doubt about that!
And yeah, this is our human life, you know! We need to be on our parent's side too, in their vulnerable situation. I'm getting worried day by day, how can I do that after marriage!
Oh and you should share this story with aunty too! I bet she'll enjoy it more than we do 💙

Thank you, thank you. 😊
After marriage, you have a new home to take care of just like you planned to do your own. Someone else should fulfill the empty place and do the same as you intended to and will be doing in a new place. Also, when you devote yourself to your new home then your partner should make things easy for you to manage both, the other one that you have left, that's a little bit hard as nothing comes easy in life which is a bitter truth.
