Sorry, you ain't the center of the Universe...

Well hello, stranger

This is a short little rant about people who believe the world revolves around the. I believe we all know a few such people. I leave you with a question at the end. I think we can all wonder about it sometime. I mean everyone gets a bit too self-centred every now and then, and we need to keep ourselves in check!

This rant was inspired by Aunty Lolla and her unhealthy work environment, as well as my experience with students and their entitled mindsets. It forms part of "Stories with Lolla".

"Who do you think you are?"

A co-worker told me one day, that I should start owning my space and stop allowing others to walk over me. The conversation started with students pushing us around to fit their schedule, while we, the lecturers are forced to shut up and fall in line for them. After I started saying no and owned my space as a lecturer the students fell into place. Well not all of them but it is a start. Too little confidence is just as bad as someone who is too self-centred. And oo we have a lot of these types of people in the world!

I enjoy people-watching. It's not as creepy as it sounds. See people-watching can tell you a lot about someone and the type of person they are. Body language and ways of doing things give away someone's confidence, just like that 🤞. It's amazing how we give away so much of who we are without saying a word.

We hear from a young age that we must speak with confidence, act with certainty, proof our worth. Go through life with confidence and you can achieve all your dreams. And if you don't, then other people will misuse and abuse you.

The other side of the coin is also true. Some people are so confident that they think the sun sets when they sit down. I do not aim this at those who are confident and fill their place in life nicely. No, it's those people who think they deserve more than anyone else under the sun. Those who will look down on you from their throne that no one approved of. Those who will kick you when you are down, just to prove that you are less than them.

It's those big talk, smart talk, living in a small world type of people. You know, the longer they talk, the bigger their ego gets. The more you listen the more extreme the stories get. "I once met the Queen and the Pope and Lord Farquaad at a Casion in Vages". Sure, Fred, you did... They are convinced that others are worth less than them, stupider than them, easily manipulative and gullible. These types of people are full of themselves and will end up believing their own stories and lies.

It's the kind of people who kiss themselves in the mirror before they go to bed every night. The ones that force you to treat them differently than the man on the street, because they are "better", "smarter", "more handsome", or "from a greater family". They believe the world belongs to them, they are entitled. My grandfather believed no one is more valuable than another, we all die and suffer the same faith. Just because you were placed in a box to "be better and look down on others" by society, your degree or your family, doesn't mean you have to live that way.

I have met a lot of entitled people in my life, some are family, others were friends, co-workers, the guy at the grocery store who held at an old lady... It is at times like these that I want to stand in front of such a person and ask "Who do you think you are?". It can go either way. The person may realize "hell, I am not the centre of the universe..." or we can stand there for five days and listen to the person tell me how 'special' they are.

Oo, please I don't have time for such type of people!

Now comes the question. "Do you have confidence in yourself and your achievements, or do you believe the rest of us are just peasants?". Isn't it lonely up there on your wobbling throne?

Thank you for joining in on this rant. I hope you don't have to deal with "BIG EGO" people every day! Stay safe and warm.

We know people like this and they seriously wind us up. There’s my friend’s wife, oh my word, thinks the world owes her and she has been everywhere apparently!

Why do they feel the need to always one up someone? I promise if you tell such a person you won a few bucks with lotto, they'll inform you that they have a cure for cancer!

Or they’ll say they won the big jackpot a few years ago and again last week!

El título me recuerda a una frase de el mundo gira alrededor del sol no de ti, y bien como dices no está mal tener confianza en si mismo pero no hay que pisotear a los demás. Saludos

🤣 I've been seeing this Vibe lately where people think they're the center of universe and it's the title that caught my attention. Definitely a well-done rant.

We academics and lecturers are on the frontlines facing this war. It comes from two sides: from old professors that want to keep their grounds secure and safe. They will defend their grounds at any cost, even attacking other people who work with you. They will throw ad hominem attacks and change the narrative. They will look down upon you and because of their stature and reputation, people will believe them without doing the necessary research to see if what they say is true.

On the other side, we have, as you discussed in your post, these students who think that the world revolves around them. We need to reschedule, as you noted, tests and essays because it does not suit their schedules, as if the world works like that!? If we do not give them marks, even if their stuff is wrong, we are to be blamed. They demand extra marks, re-marks, and everything else but they could not be bothered to pitch up for class, could not be bothered to do the readings, the list can go on and on.

And the sad thing is these people are "released" into the world where life-altering decisions are made, where we interact with them and they just steamroll over you.

Sorry for the mini rant on your rant! Hahah, thank you for sharing this, people are these days so self-centered that it is rather scary. (I had two students like this; maybe I should write a rant about these ordeals.)

In any case, I hope things will become better soon otherwise we are in for a bumpy ride.

Yes!! Why is it that we find ourselves sandwich between them!? Most of the old folk in pur department retired last year, however we still keep the around as research fellows... This sounds terrible when said in English 🤣... My point 👉 Technically they aren't part of the department anymore, I mean they don't have offices, they aren't part of meetings, we see them once every month. They still delight the way we do things, down to the way the kitchen is set up, our tests are to challenging according to a few and that's why our students fail (somehow they can't accept that maybe it the students 🤔).

I had a high plagiarism on an assignment today, once again... The student is repeating, had plenty of warning, for multiple lecturer's... We decided to call a board hearing. The student approached a few of us today and asked why we hate her 😅... We don't, you're not following the rules. Can't give you a degree if you can't follow rules 😅. Can't have you running into a municipality claiming to be an urban planner when you can't even plan an assignment.

Please do post your rant!! My co-worker said the other day "we need to speak up and listen to one another, these students, they will kill us or drive us crazy". Don't know about you, but I don't have time to go mad now 🤣🤣. Not yet!

Oh yes, same here, but they keep their offices (in some cases). We have very high profile professors at the department, so it is a good thing to keep them around I guess? I think that is their reasoning. Alas, it is an interesting space!

That is exactly their reasoning and I do not understand why? I mean, I had students who got mad at me because I dared schedule ad hoc unscheduled class exercises (as indicated in the module framework which they do not read). They obviously missed them and did not receive a mark, but it is all of a sudden my fault and not theirs. How did we end up here?

🤣🤣 Aaa you know that saying "the customer is always right". I think students view themselves as customers 🤣

And the university does as well! That is why they come down so hard on us if we fail too many students irrespective if they understood the work or not! (At least in my case haha.)

Its so unfortunate but our world is full of people who feel they own it all and should be treated like queens and kings. Sometimes, upbringing causes it, other times environment and personal selfish ambitions. Whichever one, we all need to be selfless and not selfish.

Those who self-centered, me first attitude and at the end, the show off and that is all because they loose respect.

There are sadly a number of people who think this way, though I think it’s been a part of the human condition for a while. I’ve experienced some of them in my time and it is very tedious. I’m glad you are sticking up for yourself and making the students fit around your schedule not the other way around. It’s important to have boundaries!
