Adopting Amitahba Buddha recitation method without fear - 无惧念佛

This is some reflections on the excellent talk by Venerable Jingben where he explained and emphasised that the Nianfo or Amitahba Buddha recitation method is one where one completely relies on Buddha Amitabha rather than basing on our effort.

Venerable Jingben explained that we should have the attitude and willingness to rely on the Buddha as he had made the aspirations to lead us to his Pureland many eons ago.

Specifically, we must have the confidence that Amitabha Buddha is protecting us, ensuring our next passage to his Pureland upon death.

Accordingly, there are two ways one can view this practice: either taking the "monkey" approach or the "cat" approach.

The image taken from the screenshot of the video shows that the monkey grabs hold of the mother tightly. The fear of being left behind is strong. We should not practice Nianfo while at the same time worried that we will be left behind by Buddha Amitabha.

On the other hand, the kitten is taken by the mother cat by her mouth. There is no need for the kitten to fear. It trusts the mother.

When we practice Nianfo, we should be clear that there no need to fear. We must have the confidence that Amitabha Buddha is protecting us.

This is a simple but profound lesson of letting go, simply by trusting.
