Northern Flicker
This is one bird that I know is around by their high-pitched squeak-like call. You can also tell by the hammering they make when using their pointy beak to make holes, as this bird is a member of the woodpecker family. I find they are usually quick to fly away once they see you, so its good to approach slowly and quietly if you want to get some pictures of one. They can often be found on the ground as well, they are the only woodpeckers to feed on the ground and will hop around looking for bugs to feed on. Residential areas are a place they seem to have adapted to, as many neighborhoods might have a few northern flickers nesting in them.

Northern Flickers are so cool. The ones I've seen here in the west coast tend to have a bright red colour under the wings and throat, which I see is missing from this variety. I read that the ones in the prairies are yellow-shafted and the ones out in the west coast are red-shafted.
