Story time: Down by the river

(Edited)

There she was again wading in the river. She carried a solitary yellow rose in one hand. She moved slowly but deliberately. She stopped at a flat rock, on which she could sit. She placed the rose beside her, then she watched the effervescent water, bubble and swirl around the stones and rocks.

The sun's rays pierced through the verdant bent trees, illuminating the shallow river bed as the water glistened. The water rippled and seemed to dance as it flowed downstream, methodically bathing the rocks. She delighted at how beautiful the river looked with its crystal clear waters. She observed the tall reeds at the river bank as they rustled slightly in the cool breeze. The air felt fresh and pure so early in the morning.

Angela picked up the rose, smelt it and released it in the water. She watched as it meandered down the river. Whilst watching the rose, she noticed her reflection in the moving water. She saw John, her younger brother, who was the spitting image of her. She was immediately reminded of why she was there. She inhaled deeply and sighed.

Angela hoped that her brother at least enjoyed the beauty of the river, on that fateful day. He was there with his 6 neighbourhood friends, James, Tom, Harry, Rob, Eric and Jeff. They all said the same thing,
“John slipped off the rock and hit his head.”
His death was declared an accident.

After that day, the years-long practice of Saturday trips to the river, by the boys of Cumberland Place, came to an abrupt halt. Before their teenage years they went with their fathers, thereafter they were unaccompanied. Now Angela goes there monthly. It became a ritual. She never forgets a yellow rose, even when there are no blooms from the rosebush they planted together as children.

Angela does not know that she is never alone. Rob is always there. He quietly watches her from the bushes, as she silently pays respect to her little brother, John.

I think Rob loves Angela so much that he watches over her from time to time even when she does not know

Indeed and he also feels her pain regarding the loss of his friend who is her brother.

This fact that is was based on a true story makes it even more epic. Letting go of the memories of loved ones that are long gone can be really hard. Eitherway, Angela is a loving siblings and I'm certain Rob knows about this.

Yes it is and a sad childhood memory for me. Yes Angela and her family had a very hard time coming to term with their loss. Everyone did. It is always sad to lose a loved one but worse when it is a young person.

Siblings' love is unconditional and endless. I believe he's watching over her from heaven .

Yes that is indeed correct - to get along with one's siblings is very special.

I am so sorry to hear what happened to Rob. it must be hard for her to accept the fact that she had lost her brother, but yes from my cultural perspective Rob will always be there to watch her, and looking for her from the other side.

Yes - John will always be with her in spirit and in her memories. Loss of a loved one is hard but evenmoreso when it is someone young.

Thank you for writing in The Ink Well.

This off-prompt narrative was a little on the short side for what the Ink Well recommends for pieces posted in the community, but was a nice read nevertheless (the guideline is 700-1500 words with a minimum of 350). A slightly longer piece would have afforded the opportunity to develop the story and show more of the relationship between the siblings, which would have elevated your piece. A good piece of fiction also needs balance between narrative, action, and dialogue to drive the story forward. This Ink Well resource might be of interest to you:

If there is such a beautiful place, the heart of a person wants to visit it again and again, as we see in the picture, such natural views feel very good and give a lot of peace to the heart of a person.

Rob might feel the urge to console and help Angela get over her grief but he has no idea how to go about it and prefers to stay hidden.

Yes indeed. However there might be more hiddedn that he might know about.

The breeze of that place might reminds her of her brother. Now matter how much siblings fight or stay apart . There is always something that connects them.
I think Rob wants to solace angela .his love is crystal clear by his habit of seeing her through bushes. He must try to get rid of his hesitation and pounce upon her
She reallly needs one to assuage her

Rob might indeed be a source of solace and information for Angela - especially being that he was there at the time of her brother's passing.

Oh! Really tragic. The pain of losing a loved one is sharp and piercing. Always fresh in the mind no matter how long it may have been. I hope she holds on to the good memories of when he was alive 🥺.

Yes and the pain seems harder when the person is young. Indeed the nice memories will be a source of comfort.

So sorry @nkemakonam89 - it is very difficult to lose a loved one at any age but when young it seems so unfair.

It would be really painful for her to remember her late brother who was died at this place.

A tragic tale.
Although losing someone can be accidental.
The one who feels it the most wouldn't always agree.

Hope Angela and Rob finds some peace 🕊️

I think rob should summon up the courage to approach her, before she'll be taken, love doesn't wait for no one
