Today I got an inspiration from my brother to grow some yams in a sack in my very own Varanda. As a farmer I have learnt and know quite a lot about growing yams but this very type is something I have never tried before.

Why growing yams in sack

  • There are series of reasons that one may chose for deciding to grow yams in sack, but one of the major reasons I am familiar with is for the maximization of available land space. For instance if you do not have a farm or enough capital to lease one for farming purpose, you can decide to grow some yams even in your kitchen. The space large enough to grow a hundred poultry birds can be enough to grow more than 300tubers of yams.
  • Another reason is that it keeps a good distance and the proximity of your farm closer to you. Your planted yams are there in your compound and you can always see and monitor their growth.

Aside listing this I have decided to personally grow some sack yams here in my compound to learn, see and compare it's growth with the ones planted in the field, if their level of growth and productivity is thesame.

The initial things to do in preparation for growing sack yams is first by

  • Getting some Sacks, long ones preferably because the tubers grow tall along the debth of the sack.
And if the sack can equally be wide enough that will be perfect.
  • Fill the sacks with quality loamy-clay soil or any fertile soil within your reach

  • Here are my already prepared yam seedlings

  • Plant them individually in each sack.

  • If you can find some quality location where both rain and sun can come in contact with the sack planted yams, this will be very good because yams need these elements to germinate and grow.
At the early stage of planting this one can do a form of mulching to prevent excess sun from penetrating the yams seedlings before they germinate or continue growing.

My nephew thought that everything I was doing was a child's play hence he joined me, both playing and working at thesame time.
It was a beautiful distraction.

So this is my little space and plans to grow some sack yams in my compound. You can follow me up and let's see how this journey will end with constant updates. Remember that yams takes at least 8months for full maturity.

I really thought of doing this but since we had a small piece of land my dad wouldn't allow me try it. So he says he preferred the natural soil than this science..

This method will be very helpful now headsmen are terrorizing and killing farmers in Nigeria. I will try this yam planting method.
