How we learnt to grow everything we eat. Sorghum Spp, Guinea corn as another healthy grain.
Hello Hive.

This is yet another annual crop in our farm, easy to grow harvest and store. Maybe these annual crops and cereals are healthy and we eat alot of them but they do not generate any income for us.
Guinea corn is far better than maize, a 50kg bag can be sold for as high as 35k naira while maize has not exceeded 20k naira.
Guinea corn and maize are both used to prepare flour and the same set of meals interchangeable but we believe that guinea corn is more nutritious hence the price is a bit higher than corn.

In order to maximize farm space we have often mixed guinea corn together with our corn farm.
Each time corn is planted and nearing harvest state we move to add guinea corn such that as soon as the corn is harvested, the guinea corn will then have enough space and air to produce well.
So these ones are growing healthily right under a section of our corn farm.

With the height of this corn even at 6weeks old, the guineas will grow healthily underneath and sooner the maize will be harvested at 3months plus.
Planting was done in late June a bit late compared to the ones we plant in early May previously.
Mixed farming is helping us to maximize the land apace available for agriculture here.
Recently people have preferred real estate business to farming and almost every land is purchased for building houses. Well little did they know that it is not always about houses but food is an important investment to look into as well.

Mixed farming also reduces the cost of production, since the same land cultivated is used to grow two or more crops and the weeding process is done for both at the same time.
When we hire laborers to weed the farm both the corn and sorghum are cleaned simultaneously since they are in the same field.
I have been used to growing only annual crops for food but with much experience now I believe that tergan has opened my eyes to how I can grow commercial plants to make some healthy income while using the money from such to buy these cheaper annual crops.
Which means that I could make farming profitable while still been able to provide food for myself and the family.
Nice blog
I believe the august rains would support the late June planting. Mixed farming helps to maximize the yield from the limited land resource
Exactly sir.
