Gradually we have been able to cover the piece of our houses here with different types of poultry birds. Almost everyone in this neighborhood is into poultry farming. The experiences of having to purchase expensive meat from the market drove alot of people to start poultry rearing.

Poultry rearing is one of the cheapest business that one can venture into. The major financial challenge is if you can have the capital to build a pen house, purchase your first specie of birds and then be able to feed them for at least 4months. When this is achieved the money gotten from the sale of the birds can then be reinvested and used go expand the business scope.

This turkey my sister has gotten about this time last year has just started laying eggs. The turkey used at least a year to grow and is laying eggs already now. Turkey can use lesser time than that for it's growth. While this bird was coming up we have had different people who came go suggest for us different type of food supplements that can be used to enhance it's growth.

Most people that are into animal reading often use supplements to make the birds grow faster so that they can sell them up and make profit. Imagine raining a bird for just 6-8week and the bird is ready for consumption. These supplements are chemicals that may have a long term health effect on the people who consume these animals.

We have animal feeds that contains unhealthy elements as well and we should be mindful of the industrially produced animal feeds.

There are local ways of mixing different grains, like the corn, soybeans and Groundnuts, all local ingredients that can be added to produce the animal feed locally without any side effects.
I hope we can learn how to grow our animals with local foods to produce healthy meat for ourselves.
