ATTENDING A LOCAL BOOK CLUB MEETING TO LET OFF SOME STEAM

avatar

The week was quite a busy one for me. Running here and there, working on one project or the other, trying to make sure I update my notes… al in all, it was very demanding. After all the stress of the week, I decided to chill out a bit and step outside my room to do something other than work or attend classes. Luckily for me, yesterday happened to be the day for a bi-monthly meeting at my book club in the university.

The book club is called “Book Panda club” and her members are referred to as “Pandas”. We come together twice in a month to discuss a book we must’ve chosen previously. All members of the club are students, we use the medium as an avenue to escape from anything pertaining to academics and have a bit of fun.

At first, I was feeling reluctant and didn’t want to go because I couldn’t finish the book that was nominated, but I managed to convince myself to step out anyways.

The name of the book we were to discuss on was “Await your reply” by Dan Chaon.

The book started out by introducing us to three separate people – strangers to each other. They all lived differently lives with nothing in common except for the fact that they all had serious dark issues they were battling with. One is looking for his long-lost twin brother, the other is a just graduated high school girl that just eloped with her former history teacher and the third one just learnt of a news that makes him drop out of college and disconnect himself from the outside world. Somehow along the line, their lives get intertwined.

Even though I couldn’t finish the book, I was glad that I came because I learned a lot of things by listening to what others had to say about it. And apart from what I learnt, I finally got what I’d be craving for quite a while – fun!

After the discussion on the book, we proceeded to the game of the day. We called the game “WHAT’S THAT PHRASE WITH A LITTLE TOUCH OF HANGMAN”. Too long eh? Sorry, we’d think of something shorter next time. 😂

So, how is the game played?

Just as the name of the game, we all had to guess a particular phrase by looking at a card and deducing it from the clues on a card that’ll be shown to all players. Each player, at the beginning of the game, has a head and four limbs (two legs and two arms). For each missed question, the player losses a limb, until finally, the head. If a player manages to guess a phrase correctly, he/she gets to grow back a lost part. Any player that losses the head is out of the game.
I really enjoyed the game because they were brain-tasking and interesting. At the end of the game, I managed to take the 3rd position out of 10 players. I deserve accolades, right?

The winner of the game being celebrated

After the games ended, we all resolved to nominate our next book on our WhatsApp platform as time was far spent and we needed to go. We took pictures and then decided to call it a day with everyone going their way.
Our next meeting is in two weeks, and I will try my best to make sure I read the nominated book this time around.

Here are some of the other photos we took at the meeting.

This is so awesome. I wish there were gatherings like this one near me. Book lovers are shy where I come from. 😅

Yo, I also love that everyone in these pictures is swagged out to all hell. 😁💯

I'm glad people can still connect like this through books, gives me hope. 🙂

Peace 🍻

Thanks for the kind words. 😊😁

Some of us were also shy at first, but as time went by we started feeling comfortable around each other.

You can start one in your area if you want. You can just start with one or two people and then grow from there.
