DON'T LOOK UP - ANOTHER SATIRICAL MASTERPIECE || WARNING!! - CONTAINS SPOILERS

After much anticipation, I finally got to watch this movie yesterday.

As someone who enjoys satirical works so much, Don't look up was a movie I wasn't planning on missing.

The first thing that drew me to the movie apart from its interesting storyline, was the list of A-list actors that acted the movie. It's not everyday you get to see the likes of Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio all acting in one movie, so I knew the movie would be a promising one, and I had high expectations for it. Was I disappointed or did the movie manage to live up to all the hype around it? You'll get to find out soon.

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Starring as the lead actor is academy winner Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the role of Dr Randall Mindy, an astronomy professor whose PHD student, Kate Dibiasky(brilliantly portrayed by another academy winner Jennifer Lawrence), discovers a comet which is on a path to destroy the earth.

As if having two oscar winners in one movie wasn't enough, Meryl Streep joins in a supporting role as the president of the united states who takes her job as serious as a kindergarten student takes an homework. Asides from being nonchalant, she is also nepotistic - having her son Jason(played by Jonah Hill) as a chief of staff who equally doesn't know what he's doing in the office and her shady "boyfriend" as a supreme court judge.

Dr. Teddy Oglethrope(played by Rob Morgan), the head of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office
Sir Peter Isherwell(played by Mark Rylance), the billionaire CEO of a tech company named BASH.
Brie Evantee(played by Cate Blanchett, another academy award winner), the host of the Daily Rip
Jack Bremmmer(played by Tyler Perry), the co-host of the Daily rip show.
Riley Bina(played by Ariana Grande), a celebrity must star

There are many more interesting characters, but I'll be introducing them along the way. For now, let's get into the plot.

THE PLOT

The movie opens with Kate Dibiasky(Jennifer Lawrence) discovering a comet while working with a telescope. At first, there was excitement and everybody took turns to congratulate her for her discovery, including Dr Mindy(Leonardo DiCaprio himself. But as they all sat down to calculate the trajectory of the comet, Dr Mindy discovers something strange, so he asks the others to leave except for Kate. After further calculations, they discover that the comet, which is about 6-9 kilometers wide, is set on a path of direct impact on earth in the next six months. They immediately contact Dr Oglethorpe, who accompanies them to the white house so as to present their findings to the president.

On getting to the white house, their presentation was met with ridicule by the president and her chief of staff. With this new development, Dr Oglethorpe advices them to leak the information to the press, in the hope that it might generate some reaction from the public and prompt some action from the president. The both of them do this by going to The Daily Rip(the most popular show in town). But just as the presentation at the oval office, their time at the talk show was equally disastrous as Kate Dibiasky rants live on air about the impending doom, which in turn generated mockery from internet trolls. Dr Mindy on the other hand, becomes an internet sensation. And just like the president and her son, the public gives no regard to the news.

Things take a new turn when president Orlean is involved in a sex scandal. And in order to divert attention away from her mess, she decides to shift public attention towards the comet. She confirms the imminent threat and approves the launch of nuclear weapons to move the trajectory of the planet away from planet earth.
The launch was a success but due to the interference of Peter Isherwell(the top donor of Orlean), it was called off because apparently, the comet carries with it resources worth trillions of dollars.

Isherwell plans to use BASH industries' technology to harness the resources of the comet by breaking the huge comet into smaller bits that wouldn't cause any harm when they hit the earth.

Dibiasky and Oglethorpe are removed from the project, but Dr Mindy still got a seat at the table - becoming a prominent voice for the new mission and also starting an affair with beautiful talk show host Brie Evantee(Cate Blanchett) thanks to his new found fame.
Dibiasky reveals the plan of the government to the public causing worldwide unrest. She is later apprehended by officials and threatened into silence.

Dibiasky returns home, disgraced. Dr Mindy starts having concerns about some details surrounding the mission. He discovers that scientists like him who have asked similar questions had been dismissed from the project. This causes him to panic on air(just as Dibiasky had done), blasting the Orlean government and BASH industries for what they are about to do to humanity. After his rant, he reconciles with Dibiasky as the comet's path becomes visible on the earth's atmosphere. Together, the both of them start the "Just look up" campaign with the aim of prompting other countries of the world to launch their own mission to divert the comet instead of waiting for the USA. As a countermeasure, the Orlean government starts the "Don't look up" campaign.

Other countries try a last minute mission to deflect the comet, but fail miserably. BASH industries becomes the last hope for humanity. And in a sad turn of events, their mission to harness the comet's resources also fails, dooming all occupants of the earth.

Dibiasky, Oglethorpe and Dr Mindy spend their last moments eating dinner at Dr Mindy's house. And while the earth is being destroyed, the president, Isherwell and few other wealthy people escape through a ship that has been designed to cryogenically keep them alive until it find's an earth-like planet where there can survive. 22,740 years later, there have found a habitable planet. They wake from their cryogenic sleep and step on land where president Orlean is immediately eaten by a creature Isherwell named Bronteroc. The film ends with more of the animals approaching them.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE MOVIE

One wouldn't expect anything less from a movie packed with that much talent.

While watching the movie, I was a bit saddened by the many ills that have now riddled our society. How we enjoy paying more attention to the lifestyle of celebrities rather than focus on things that really matters.

This movie basically makes a mockery of the current state of our society. And if you're someone like me who enjoys satirical works, this movie is for you. I believe there were references to issues surrounding topics like Covid19, climate change, etc. Even if you're not a fan of satires, the brilliant quips in the movie are things to look forward to.

The writer managed to pass his message with subtlety by giving the movie a comedic tone. The acting was perfect, and so was the writing. I'm glad I watched it.
If I were to give it a rating out of 10, I'd give it an 8.5.

Some people won't like it though, because of the various political undertones, and that's totally fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
