I did it again, now I have an Ariocarpus Retusus.

Well this time I am more convinced than ever that I have a problem with cacti and succulents, I have become a buyer without control, and as I saw that the seeds that I mentioned the last time will take years to give me specimens that are in a flowering stage, I searched the internet until I found a person who would sell me one.

Not that I spent too much money, I actually only spent about $25, the Ariocarpus was $20, and the other $5 was on a few more cacti, I also bought pereskiopsis with the intention of doing micro grafting with the cacti that will be born from the seeds.

I am no expert on Ariocarpus, and at first glance it looks good to me, but like any good enthusiast, I decided that I should change pots and improve the mix.

IMG_20220511_191230.jpg

IMG_20220511_191223.jpg

I decided to reuse a pot, and as in almost all the sites I visited I read that the substrate should be almost 100% mineral, I made the mix with tepojal and small lava rock, I only added less than 5% of worm humus, I'm not sure if I did the right thing but we will see with time.

IMG_20220511_191401.jpg

The mix that it came in seemed to me to be mineral as well, however I noticed that it was retaining a lot of moisture, so I think I did the right thing by putting it in another pot.

IMG_20220511_192356.jpg

When I saw the humidity I remembered that I also wanted to add carbon to prevent fungus in the mix.

IMG_20220511_192629.jpg

So basically this is the mix that I prepared, some stones are smaller than others, but as I always like to decorate the top of my plants to make them look more interesting in the pictures, I had to add crushed lava rock, I also do this to give some firmness to the plant and that it does not move easily from its place, as the mix is very light, I don't want any mistakes.

IMG_20220511_192748.jpg

After that it was time to decorate the surface with stones, in this way I gave the height at which the plant is in nature to make it feel as comfortable as possible, as I saw that there was some humidity, I will not water the pot until next week.

The difference in the height of the pot is good, I hope it likes the change and does not kill this little friend, tomorrow during the day I hope to take pictures with the camera because this time all were taken with the smartphone because I waited until sunset to make the transplant because the heat was unbearable, at least for me, tomorrow I will also tell you about the other plants I bought, I just need to pay about $25 more for all the seeds that my friend and I ordered, and this time I hope it will be the last thing I spend in the month.

Oh boy, I love it! Look at that size! I can't think how long it took to get to that size, unless it was grafted, but the color, and size is beautiful.

It's many years old

As soon as the seeds arrive and germinate I will start grafting on pereskiopsis to see how it goes, I have to learn this technique.

Good luck! I have this idea that Ariocarpus and such should be treasured like bonsai, over years but each to his own

I'm very desperate and I don't think I can wait more than 7 years to see their flowers, maybe I could wait 4 years haha.

I found a fertilizer that is 0-20-55 and it is making my whole garden bloom, there must be something similar in your country.

There are many and any that are low in nitrogen, higher in trace minerals are good for succulents but I prefer using banana peels. I think that the reason it finally bloomed was because it was out of a pot and into the soil for the first time 2 years ago although many other pot-grown jades have flowered happily

You know.. the first thing to treat an addiction is to acknowledge you have an addiction. So good job on that! :D
Not sure yours's should be treated though. It is a pretty enjoyable one (except the part of being broke).

I like your potting mix. The old one could retain more moisture cause it looks a lot finer than yours. The red soil you put on top is your local soil?

You might not know her, but there was a girl here that had amazing collection of cacti (a big part of my collection is from her) and she was potting all the cacti in pure mineral mix.
Have a look at her account: https://hive.blog/@andrijana/posts
Such a shame she is not around anymore. Amazing knowledge and absolutely beautiful plants.

I have to control myself haha, and more because I saw the crypto market.

The red stuff is tezontle, which is volcanic stone, I just get it in different size even different color.

And I didn't know that profile, I'll give it a check to see what I can learn, thanks.

Ohh okay. I have some lava rocks I use too, but the size is more like the black one you have there.
