Craziest Prank Ever

Just like every other person, I woke up hearty, preparing for work after saying my morning prayers, a morning ritual that I hope keeps me going in a dangerous world. It has skipped my mind that it was the first day of April, when folks would like to play on one's intelligence. So, like the everyday routine, I wore my clothes, ate breakfast and was about to set out when a call came through my phone.

The Frightful Call

Good morning, egbon. Where are you now? You need to come to school fast, heavy smoke is coming from the ICT room and the security guard cannot be found anywhere around.

This was the call from one of our neighbours around the street where the school I head is located. This guy usually comes to charge his phone anytime the school power-generating set is on.

I had my heart in my mouth when I heard this statement. It was like the clouds had fallen on me. In my confused state, I became pressed and visited the loo twice. When I returned from the loo, I wore two different shoes, a black on the right and a brown on the left leg and dashed out of the house.
The journey from my residence to the school usually would be about thirty minutes on foot and seven minutes on foot. As I reached the gate of my residence, I waited for okada (motorcycle) but could not get any, so I started walking. Then different thoughts flashed through my mind.

Thoughts of The Unknown

We just got some newly installed computer systems into the ICT department because we thought of equipping it for effective teaching. The move was initiated by me. Now that it has gotten to the extent of a fire accident and no insurance cover, I started regretting the move.

On the other hand, the guy who called me also said that the security guard was nowhere to be found. That gave me another headache. Could it be that he has been caught unawares in the ICT room and unable to come out? These crazy thoughts kept flashing in my head, all at the same time.

My next move was to call in the proprietor of the school, an old man who was just trying to impact society by adding value. This will certainly affect his psyche. At first, I thought of not calling him but for security reasons, I damned the consequences and put a call across to him.

I finally got a motorcycle to school after these thoughts about all that might be happening over there. Soon, I arrived at school but to my amazement, nothing of such was happening.

The security guard was seen at his duty post, standing and already welcoming the students as they walked into the compound. It was then I realised that something must be wrong.

Sanje, what's happening?

I asked the guard who greeted me in response.

Good morning sir. Oga, didn't you see you are wearing two opposite colour shoes?

It was at this moment that I realized that. And then, I asked again:

Is there any problem?

Sanje replied me, saying:

Everything is fine, boss.

Now I know that I have been fooled.
Not long after, the proprietor drove down in his old Volkswagen beetle car. It was so embarrassing that I had to make that call and now that Baba is here, how would I narrate the story.

It Is The Fool's Day

There was no other option than to tell the proprietor that I received an anonymous call telling me that heavy smoke was seen coming out from our ICT room and that the security man was nowhere to be found.
I even had to show Baba my shoes. He laughed on seeing that I was wearing two different colour shoes.
He asked me to go home at once to change it before someone would think I was going insane.

This is what you get when you are not on the alert. Every first day in April, people go the mile to cook a prank that would stir the most, I guess that whoever arranged this, got you very well and deserved to be given an award.

I was glad that Baba was not angry, he too must have had this experience or also played a role in pranking someone.

Later in the day, the guy who could me appeared with laughter in his face. I just downplayed it and life continued but I wasn't happy at the level he went. I have since come to the realization that people will pull up pranks every other time, especially on the first day of April.
