There is always a first time to an event in individual live. I have no doubt had my first time experiences to divers occurrences in life. Like the first time a wooed a girl, my first time with alcohol, the first time I went to the beach and discovered that I have phobia for sea waves.

Sometimes in December 1999 when I gained admission to the university, I 2as filled with excitement. I would be finally leaving home. You know, growing up with my parents from my childhood till this time did not give me such experience as to seeing what the large world looks like.

The journey was five to six hours long. It was my first time leaving our home, my haven, the place where I hide my head under the security of my parents. All that is gone now as I am all by myself, taking decision without having to necessarily consult anyone.

Sleep and Wake Up Time

I live to be an early bird. When I got to school, that habit did not change. I kept on with nature off having to wake up, say my prayers sometime I do that while taking an early morning walk.

The only different thing now is that no one is here to wake me from sleep. Setting an alarm was however very helpful.
I don't want to miss lectures, if I do, I would have to read extra hard. So, I ensured to keep up with lecture time and to be comfortably seated so I could comprehend what the lecturer has to deliver.

Choice of friends and peer pressure

I was raised as a church boy. Being a good boy, I was determined to keep that identity. Somehow, one thing led to another and I lost focus. It all started with one sip of alcohol here and a drag on a cigarette butt there, before you knew it, I became a frequent drinker. That also affected my pocket money. Those days, there were no ATM machines or cards, so when I get broke, I would have to travel another six hours home to get reimbursed.

Over time, I learned that some of my decision play a role in whom I become and how others perceived me. It bothers me so much, I don't like to been seen as a wayward individual so, I decisively decided to quit alcohol after my short addiction.

Problem Solving Mentality

Growth and development are a whole part of life. One of those development in our days was to go to school. It was nonetheless one thing I wish to pursue vigorously. One proverb that sunk to our memory back then is:

If education is expensive, try ignorance.

Hence, many young people me would love to go to school to make our dreams come true.
In the middle of schooling, problems do emanate. These problems of *want and need is top on all. During that period where I had to wear my thinking cap so I could pick from my scale of preference what ought to be done now and what ought to be put away for another time.
This experience did add to my growing stages as I mature to become the man that I am today. Though, there was mixed feeling on my first tri away from home, to start a new phase of life, the excitement of going to the university and the emotion or pain of leaving home where I had all that I needed at the moment.

Quiting alcohol was the best you have done because sometimes some friends can make you drink and make you spend unnecessary money.

When you are out of ypur parents house, you will be free and can make some special Decisions on your own.

I was over-protected until I left home to see the world from another perspective.

Really interesting. Smoking & drinking are addictions people find extremely difficult to get rid of. I'm glad you were to overcome them.

I first had to run away from friends that influenced me, then the addictions dropped per time.

It will definitely dawn on us when we start living alone and take decisions without anyone there for us. I love how you maintained your habit of waking up early too.

It wasn't helping my future, so it had to go for the good.
