Heavy rains and landslides in Uganda result in at least 16 fatalities.

According to tweets from the Uganda Red Cross, at least 16 people perished in western Uganda after torrential rains in the Kasese district on Tuesday night led to a landslide early on Wednesday.The majority of the found bodies were women and children, according to the red cross. Red Cross spokesman Irene Nakasiita tweeted that six other people were hurt and were being treated at a nearby hospital.

To find survivors, rescuers have been digging through the muck. Due to its location in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains, which share a border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kasese district, where the accident happened, is vulnerable to landslides, particularly during the rainy season.After a protracted drought, severe rains have descended on parts of Uganda since late July, resulting in flooding, fatalities, and the devastation of infrastructure, crops, and homes.

A report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs claims that more than 300,000 people have been impacted by floods and landslides in Uganda's eastern and western regions. The report added that there have likely been 65,000 displaced individuals.In the months of August through December, the nation's weather agency had issued a warning that it would experience exceptionally heavy rains that would be harmful and recommended residents of hilly areas to be cautious or seek refuge elsewhere.A landslide that swept through the Nanyinza village on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the same area in October 2018 killed at least 41 people.

Too sad that the rain the same rain that Ugandans pray for to support agriculture which is the backbone of the country does this destruction
