WAKE (to watch or to vigil)

Death is inevitable because every being has an ending. Even though we are already aware of it. We can't say that when our loved ones pass away we feel nothing. They may be old or young, it's still painful knowing that we can no longer see them or feel them. That's why we Filipinos have these 9 days of waking from dead loved ones.

Waking is like spending time for 9 days with our loved ones even though they're already dead. It's being called "wake" because aside from loved ones our siblings. Random people can also attend spending night until morning. People who will be waking should not sleep because according to our belief. A dead body should be watched or else mythical creatures will get them or take them away. I don't know if it's true or not but that's how I've been aware since then.

The family who will be hosting a wake or vigil will spend money. Simply because they'll rent someone who leads a prayer every night for 9 days. After the prayer, they will offer coffee, food, and drinks. This is to make sure that the attendees will not be bored staying there and stay there for long.

Gambling is allowed as well on an occasion like this. Even though gambling is prohibited, in waking it's different so it's allowed. Of course, the family who hosted it will be the one to find cards or any type of gambling as long as no cock fighting. Just minor gambling to make sure people will enjoy the time spent while attending a wake.

It has been going on since then that relatives, friends, and neighbors pay respect to this kind of occasion. Losing someone is not a joke and this is the way to comfort someone who just lost their loved ones. What about you, in your country? Do you do this or are you different? Let us know by telling us.

Paul is the name but prefers to be called mrnightmare that feels like living in the dream. A country boy and a dreamboy (dreamer) who likes to stay in a small village even though it means abandoning the future to become a seaman. The passion is writing but not sailing in the vast ocean. Don't wonder if the face will not be shown, this is better where the words can flow smoothly. Come, you can tell me your stories and I'll tell you mine. Together, let's explore the world by broadening our thoughts. If you need a shoulder I can lean you mine and I hope I can lean yours. The world is fun when living is not being alone but with someone.

There's also a saying that you can't wear red in attending a wake or are not allowed to sweep the floor. I once got scolded for sweeping the floor during the wake of my aunt.

Yeah, that's not allowed but for now, not all people follow that kind of belief anymore.

Condolences sa mga namatyan. This tradition of 'waking'or bilar is something that we should keep. It is the best the best that we can for our neighbors and friends, family and relatives. Playing cards is okay but I think not gambling I hope.

Losing someone is truly a heartbreakng thing to experience, but I think it lessens the pain when family and people get together to mourn. I would know. I've never been in a waking that lasted the whole day, I just tend to sleep and tell others so that we have shifts.

The tradition is quite similiar in my country but there are no waking. We only took prayer for seven days.

9 days wake actually caught my eye. I'm just curious, does the dead body has to be there for 9 whole days? Will it start to smell? Is there any special treatment being done to the body? Sorry to have throw you thousand and one questions at the same time.

It's fine, 9 days are part of our beliefs that the soul is still in the house. Yes, it will be in the house and it will be injected with formalin. This kind of operation is called embaling.
