Driving the countryside in Umbria

Taking the small backroads

umbria-corner-italy.jpg

There is no better way of exploring Italy than driving the small winding roads through Umbria’s countryside. The towns of Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto and Orvieto give us a sense of their culture heritage with their cobblestone streets, medieval churches and grand piazzas. Many towns are perched on hilltops, offering enticing views of the countryside with its grapevines and olive orchards.

I made a quick stop here to get a sketch of this corner building and streets. I love the city planning involved, allowing for statues, fountains, views, and other human-enhancing aspects.

The sketch was done using a rapidograph pen with brown permanent ink in the cartridge. Later I added the color washes.
