SketchTravel – Drawing and painting Taos Pueblo

Sketching San Geronimo Church and a couple other pueblo houses
We took the tour this time while visiting the Taos Pueblo. Afterwards I made a couple sketches. The adobe San Geronimo Church is stunning in its solid simplicity. In fact, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Taos Pueblo is big and built up from flat land, on both sides of a stream. Family members have traditionally built on as their numbers grew, so that the pueblo is actually five stories high in one place. Many places have merchandise or food for sale. You enter through their front door and can see how they live. I got a little jewelry and a few handmade snacks to eat. I love the peach pies when they’re in season.
We visited again later in the afternoon, so that I could look again for sketch opportunities. The sun casts strong shadows so that the views tend to look quite different depending on the time of day. I drew with colored ink and watercolor for the church, and then used a black ink pen and a sienna-colored pencil for the other two. I like to mix up my techniques.
