It pays to get here early

For our second trip to these UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the edges of Kyoto, we got up early and arrived around 7am. There were only a couple visitors at that time, and they were mostly taking posed selfies for their Instagram influencer pages. So once past them we practically had the place to ourselves.

On this day we happened to be out of yen and the monks only take cash for entry, no credit. A man nearby overheard this and paid our way in, saying this place was too great to miss. We thanked him and offered to pay him back asap, but he was from Australia and said no worries. It was such a kind gesture.
