Monsanto is located in east central Portugal near the Spanish border. Nestled among giant boulders, everything is built of rock. The rooms in our little cottage had several walls made of stone as it was built up to and around several boulders, as most of the dwellings are. Our place is seen in the bottom left photo. There are few lights to see by after dark, and only a couple restaurants, though our place had a kitchen.

A trail leads to the top of the mountain where there are ruins of a Knights Templar castle. We found Monsanto to be a spectacular and original place with beautiful views over the surrounding area.
