The Power of Words and How They Can Change Our Life

Hello, friends of Empowertalent! I hope you are all doing very well. I'm happy to be back here again. Today I read @talentos's initiative about being impeccable with our words. How right they are that words have infinite power in our lives and in how our reality feels. We can choose to think about the things we lack and always complain openly with words about them, or we can look on the bright side of things, which are often lessons disguised as learning opportunities that will do us more good than harm.

At a certain point in my life, I was always complaining about not having what I wanted, which led me to repeat in words over and over again that this wasn't right or that it wasn't what I expected. I always saw the glass half empty rather than half full. Naturally, that kept me in a cycle of painful words that only caused me to sink deeper. I couldn't see the positive side of living with good health even while dealing with a problem that limited me from doing certain activities; however, over time I learned that it was all a process. If I hadn't gone through that situation, I wouldn't be the conscious person I am today.

I think I am not very good at saying positive things to myself. I can tell myself mentally that I'm doing well or that I can handle whatever I set my mind to, but sometimes you have to repeat it a lot to actually believe it. The words that hurt me the most weren't the external ones—they were my own, because I became or wrapped myself up in what I believed I was, simply because I always saw myself as someone very different from everyone else. I was almost always in a duel with myself; I wasn't very kind with my words toward myself, and there was always something that made me feel uncomfortable or less than enough.

I still struggle with this, and although I'm not as aggressive with myself as I used to be, I always try to remind myself of everything I have done right—the things I do with love, and the things that require twice as much effort on my part that I still manage to do anyway. It is essential to have good communication with ourselves, to speak to ourselves as if we were the child we carry inside. That child truly believes we are strong, capable, and incredible people. They remind us how fun it is to be just as we are, and how beautiful it is to accept ourselves without comparing or judging ourselves all the time.

Now that I'm older, I try to be more compassionate with myself. The words that always come to my mind are that I am a very strong person, but also a sensitive one, and that it's okay to be both. I remind myself that I will always be able to count on myself even when I feel like I'm alone—even if I'm not entirely alone—and that life is an endless series of moments, encounters, and words that can either build up or destroy. That's why now, if I don't have anything good to say about someone, I prefer to wait and keep quiet. Maybe it's not always necessary to try to say something all the time.

Today, I recognize that I am a strong, brave, capable, intelligent, and beautiful person inside and out. Those are the words I try to tell myself every day. Whenever I have doubts, I remind myself that I've overcome much harder things, and that trying one more time hasn't killed me. Words spoken with empathy can change the day or even the life of those around us. We never know when someone might need to hear a "You're doing great" or "I'm here for you."
