The mind can hide memories to protect us.

Hello friends from Holos & Lotus, I hope you are all doing well. Today I was reminiscing about memories from my childhood and even my adolescence, and the truth is that I don't have many memories; a large part of my childhood memories feels as if it had vanished into thin air. I think it happens to many of us that we try to recall something specific, and after racking our brains over and over again, we end up right back at the beginning or in the present day—unable to remember anything, or only having a vague idea of what we experienced during those stages of our life.

The mind is created in an almost perfect way to make us function as human beings, but it isn't always prepared to face realities and pain that can sometimes turn into illnesses later in life. Memory within the brain can cause us to temporarily forget an event that might have caused us pain or generated a strong impact. When we try to recall certain aspects of our life, we even need the help of professionals to be able to delve deeper and see what lies behind that cloudy space of memories.

I remember that when I wanted to understand how a certain event happened—one that was hurting me and for which I couldn't find a trace in my memory—I had to turn to my family's help to understand a bit of what occurred because I was very young. Upon acknowledging what happened and how it had taken place, I understood that my mind blocked those memories because it was easier to get rid of them than to face what I was living through. When it comes to childhood, any intense event can cause very deep wounds; what seems cloudy in my mind now has shape thanks to the help of my loved ones.

If I hadn't had that support, I wonder what I would have done to remember all the things that happened. After so many years, it becomes harder to recall things, especially from childhood. However, I am grateful that I don't have many memories from those times because I know I wouldn't have felt good growing up with so much information that would hurt me. Even so, I know that things stored in memory can surface at the least expected moment—when facing a new conflict or feeling tense and anxious.

When help is sought, many of our emotional problems can be resolved if we truly wish to do so. Past experiences are not just that; they undoubtedly shape the way we behave and even what we think of ourselves and others. It isn't something everyone is willing to do; looking directly at what hurts us and what we don't want to remember takes a great deal of inner strength and willpower. Yet, it still remains in our memory and can burst like a bomb at any moment, or we simply end up somatizing it in our bodies.

I find it incredible that after so much time, the mind is still so complicated to understand—and even to explain—especially when we try to give meaning to all our conflicts. It's like walking with a cloth over our eyes; we know we can see, but we aren't willing to remove that cloth for fear that facing reality might be even more painful. It's a whole topic that has always caught my attention, and I feel many of us have asked ourselves the same questions: Why can't I remember? Or is it that I don't want to remember?

The mind is a mystery—memories that sometimes don't endure, or others we don't want and somehow block out. Great post, my friend.
