Don't take what others project onto you personally.

Hello friends of Empowertalent, I am happy to be back here again. Within the book The Four Agreements, there is an extremely important one that I believe is the hardest for us to apply in our daily lives. When opinions are expressed, depending on where they come from, we feel it might be an attack, even though the other person may simply be projecting onto you what they see in themselves but are unable to recognize or accept. It's not easy, it sounds like a tongue twister, but when we don't let external things affect us, I believe we gain more confidence and self-respect.
When we interact with other people, we realize that we often hear criticism toward others—how they should live a certain way or that the things they do are wrong. Basically, we constantly hear criticism from people toward others whom they often don't even know very well. It is very easy to fall into this, and I think it is a daily exercise to understand that we are all different and act according to our level of maturity, experiences, and the way we view the world. Upbringing and values also play an important role in all of this.
Something from others that always bothers me is when they try to make others look bad, when they come to you with a comment or information that you didn't even ask for or simply don't care about. This says a lot about the person talking about someone else, because just as they can say something negative to you about others, you could also be the topic of conversation later. I don't like these types of people; I find them unpleasant, and I think they are quite empty. In the sense that their only way of relating to others is in this negative way, which ultimately affects their own lives.

I believe that not taking things personally is a lifelong process, because it is something to think about and analyze. We always try to defend ourselves or prevent others from giving opinions or saying something about our lives, but in reality, people will always have an opinion, even if you tell them your story yourself. Each person chooses to believe whatever they want, and since we don't have the power to change this, we reach a point where we must respect ourselves and decide if we want to continue with a bond that brings us nothing good, but instead makes us feel down and disappointed for having trusted such people.
When someone comes to highlight something they know can affect us and does so recklessly, our task is to know how to handle and recognize the situation to understand how we should act. I still struggle with this; sometimes I wish I could change people's mindsets, but that is quite a dreamy thought. The reality is that each person decides what they are going to think about you or others, and we have no power whatsoever to make them change their minds. It is difficult, but we must keep moving forward even if we feel that the world can be a very critical and unpathetic place.
Imagine if we took everything others said literally, if we always let ourselves be guided by an external opinion to make decisions about our lives. It would be crazy, I think we would even get sick, but I believe being in a situation like that also allows us to see the darker parts we carry inside—the things we don't like so much about ourselves and often try to mask. For me, not taking things personally is something that gets complicated, but I have been learning along the way, especially because no one can truly know how we feel or what we need to be well better than ourselves.
