THE LAST TALK (Story) [ENG - ESP]

«Free peoples, remember this maxim: We may acquire liberty, but it is never regained once it is lost».
― Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
― Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

The old man was having a coffee under the tree while he was directing the last talk of the boy who was in front of him.

-When a person has his back to you and you are behind him, it is possible to keep seeing him, isn't it?

There was no sound or response from the pale and bruised boy who was kneeling on the ground under the scorching midday sun.

-The answer is yes. Of course you can keep watching that person, because just because he has his back to you doesn't mean you're not there.

He takes a sip of the black liquid to continue his talk:

-Sometime that person will have to turn around and face you, and as before, you will still be there... -pauses for a few seconds-. My dear friend, the same thing happens in this case; even if you didn't want to see or feel me, even if you tried to look for a safe place, even if you wanted to turn a blind eye to what was happening, reality was still reality and I was right behind you, looking at your back.

-Twelve years old, -the boy begins to say, struggling with the dryness in his mouth from the high degree of dehydration in his body due to the five days he has spent in the same position without eating or drinking-. That was the age when I realized you were coming for me. At first I-I didn't want to a-accept it, but from t-that first time you touched me in front of my parents... F-from that m-moment I knew that my life would depend on not looking back and trying to run away from those eyes that were constantly watching me.

The boy recalls the painful memory of how at the age of twelve his godfather and lifelong friend of his parents touched him under his clothes without any modesty, while his parents, in front of the situation, laughed at the jocular comments made by that old man about how big the little boy he once saw crying in his arms while holy water ran over his forehead.

-I remember that. If I'm being synically honest, when that thought of making you my slave crossed my mind I didn't think I could pull it off, I thought your parents would be a big obstacle, but no, they turned out to be the easiest people to deal with and handle. That's why it became easy for me to integrate you into my collection of slaves.

The old man takes the last remaining sip of coffee and throws the plastic cup on the rustic cement floor where the boy has been painfully kneeling for days.

-I've been helping them find you for years. Of course it hasn't been easy, knock on wood, -he says and knocks on the thick trunk of the tree under which he is standing.

The boy knows that his eyes, which have not been filled with hope for a long time, will never see the face of freedom again.

Because this is the last chapter.

The last phase that closes a cycle that began ten years ago with the kidnapping of an ordinary boy, an only child from a good family who now lives in misery. That same ordinary boy who in a few hours will be underground somewhere in the huge backyard of the old man he once considered family.

On one of the highest branches of the tree under which the old man stands, a flaming bird perched, free, singing a rhythm of happiness and tranquility.

-Hush... -the boy tries to say-, Shut up, you fucking bird! -He looks at the old man with a broken and hurt look, a look he never dared to give him before-. Tell him to shut up..., his singing hurts me!

The old man looks at the bleeding boy and wonders at what moment he decided to make a habit of what he swore to himself he would do only once.

The old man is about to repent for the horrendous acts he has been committing since several decades ago..., but, something happens: the bird that was singing so happily at the top of the tree decides to take flight and, when it passes over the boy, it decides to defecate on his face full of marks and in such a battered state that it seems almost lifeless.

-Humiliation...-Then, he remembers; the reason.

There was no time for regrets, that event reminded him of the meaning of what he disturbingly called "his art". Every slave under his feet on that ground helped to close a wound that was fostered by aberrant humiliations and inhumane treatment of his person at some point in his life, and, from which he managed to free himself, but this freedom he now lives could never compare to his native freedom, which was short-lived and taken away from him before he could realize it.

So he said:

-It's about time, dear friend.

The boy, who already understood what that meant, let the last screams of fight and resistance that still remained in his soul come out of his mouth, only he also let it mingle with his resignation.

-I came to understand all this, why you do this with people, -the boy says with a thread of voice, "It doesn't matter if the person is-is back or front, you see them as the reason, as the guilt of your suffering. And even if I've figured that out..., it's of no use to me, you'll m-maybe kill me anyway. Just remember: God is the only one who knows your ills, therefore, the only one who can judge you. Until the arrival of my last breath, I will never forgive you, but I know for sure that your thoughts are enough torment until the arrival of your great judgment.

The old man waits a moment, then begins what over the years has become a ritual; <the end of the cycle.

He takes five steps forward and is right in front of the young man. And he begins... Two turns of the boy's neck with the chain that held his life for ten years, enough strength to squeeze out his last rays of breath and in five minutes he had the boy's dead body fully stretched out in his arms, almost looking as if asleep.

Through his mind flashed the memory of when he held him in almost the same way in that church, while holy water dripped down his forehead.

-You are right... Only God can judge me, only to him I owe obedience... And he will be the one in charge of collecting my sins, I will not allow that while I live, any human being dares to judge me again.
