Sublime Sunday - Japan Diaries - Visiting the Toroya Kobo

Toroya is one of Japan's oldest confectionery companies. You will find them in many different parts of Japan, but the one which is very famous is in the Fuji area. Not very popular with tourist and, so again when you visit here it's all quiet and peaceful. They are very famous for their sweets Dorayaki and Yokan. I had read a lot about their Dorayaki and wanted to try it out.

During our day visit to Fuji, this was the last stop in the day. After finishing all the sights, we finally came here to unwind. What made me put this place in my itinerary is not the sweet, that I would have got in another sweet shops also, but it is about the location. The Toroya Kobo sits in a big forest area, which also includes Bamboo trees and a a variety of other trees. This particular one is set up as a workshop style space, where you can watch them making sweets. But by the team we reached there, they were done with the workshop part and it was only an hour left for the closure. They have a nice cafe seating with a beautiful scenery of the forest all around you.

The place feels very calm and it is spacious giving a feeling of a garden retreat rather then just a sweet shop. I tried out their famous Dorayaki. It is basically two pancakes filled with azuki bean paste which is sweet. This is the sweet that people mostly come for as it's only available at Kobo. Then there are other sweets also like Anmitsu, Yokan, Daifuku and all, but I do not have much appetite for so much sweets unless it's chocolate based. They also serve Matcha tea and drinks. I had the Matcha tea along with the Dorayaki to balance the sweetness.
